  1. 1
An RF power amplifier system, comprising:an RF power amplifier (104) configured to receive and amplify an input signal (204) to generate an output signal (110);a modulation state transition indicator circuit (1028) configured to generate a modulation state transition signal (1029) indicating a transition of modulation of the input signal through or near the constellation origin (Y);and an amplitude control loop that includes: means for adjusting an amplitude of the input signal in response to the modulation state transition signal to generate an adjusted amplitude (1012) of the input signal;and means for adjusting the attenuated amplitude of the output signal in response to the modulation state transition signal to generate an adjusted attenuated amplitude (1014) of the output signal;wherein the amplitude control loop is configured to determine an amplitude correction signal (309) indicative of an amplitude difference between the adjusted amplitude of the input signal and the adjusted attenuated amplitude of the output signal, and to adjust a supply voltage (208) or bias to the power amplifier based upon the amplitude correction signal;wherein the amplitude control loop is configured to reduce a gain of the amplitude control loop during rapid amplitude changes in the input signal, the rapid amplitude changes in the input signal being associated with the transition of modulation of the input signal through or near the constellation origin.

An RF power amplifier system, comprising:an RF power amplifier (104) configured to receive and amplify an input signal (204) to generate an output signal (110): an amplitude control loop that comprises: means for adjusting an amplitude of the input signal to generate an adjusted amplitude (1012) of the input signal, wherein the adjusted amplitude of the input signal is the amplitude of the input signal with a lower limit below which the adjusted amplitude of the input signal does not follow the amplitude of the input signal;and means for adjusting an attenuated amplitude of the output signal to generate an adjusted attenuated amplitude (1014) of the output signal, wherein the adjusted attenuated amplitude of the output signal is the attenuated amplitude of the output signal with a lower limit below which the adjusted attenuated amplitude of the output signal does not follow the attenuated amplitude of the output signal wherein the amplitude control loop is configured to determine an amplitude correction signal (309) indicative of an amplitude difference between the adjusted amplitude of the input signal and the adjusted attenuated amplitude of the output signal, and to adjust a supply voltage (208) or bias to the power amplifier based on the amplitude correction signal;wherein the amplitude control loop is configured to reduce a gain of the amplitude control loop during rapid amplitude changes in the input signal, the amplitude control loop being configured to reduce the gain of the amplitude control loop in response to a decreased level of the amplitude of at least one of the input signal and the output signal and thus reducing the gain of the amplitude control loop during rapid amplitude changes in the input signal which are associated with a transition of modulation of the input signal through or near a constellation origin (Y), the relative decrease in amplitude being associated with the transition of modulation.
