  1. 1
A media arrangement (101) for streaming media in a network, the arrangement comprising:a source (104) providing media comprising one or more channels;a streaming media system (102) receiving the media provided by the source and outputting a media data stream having one or more channels;and a plurality of destination devices (106), each destination device having a local clock, wherein each destination device in the plurality of destination devices receives the media data stream from the streaming media system and produces an output representing a media channel;wherein the streaming media system broadcasts or multicasts a time check message (402, 406);wherein each destination device in the plurality of destination devices receives the time check message and records a receipt time using the local clock, and sends the receipt time to the streaming media system;wherein the streaming media system outputs an adjust output time message including contents determined by low pass filtering values derived from recorded receipt times received from the plurality of destination devices over a predetermined amount of time to compensate for jitters due to transport jitter;wherein each destination device in the plurality of destination devices receives the adjust output time message from the streaming media system, such that the output is synchronized in time with at least one output of other devices in the plurality of destination devices by using the local clock and the contents of the adjust output time message.
  2. 2
The media arrangement of Claim 1, wherein the source is a handheld portable computing device.
  3. 3
The media arrangement of Claim 1, wherein the source and the plurality of destination devices are coupled by a combination of wireless and wired IP networks, and each channel of the media stream is output on one or more destination devices.
  4. 4
The media arrangement of Claim 1, wherein the source includes one or more software applications and the streaming media system further comprises a streaming device driver that represents the streaming media system as a standard audio device to the one or more software applications.
  5. 5
The media arrangement of Claim 1, wherein each destination device in the plurality of destination devices intercepts the time check message at a Link layer of an IP network stack and records the receipt time upon receipt of the time check message.
  6. 6
The media arrangement of Claim 1, wherein the streaming media system comprises a streaming protocol module using an IP-based communication network to communicate between the source and the plurality of destination devices, the streaming protocol module defining one or more data window time periods during which only the streaming media system requests and gains access to a communication channel and transmits the media stream to the plurality of destination devices and the streaming protocol module defining one or more control window time periods during which the plurality of destination devices use a carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance mechanism to gain access to the communication channel and transmits information to the streaming media system.
  7. 7
The media arrangement of Claim 1, wherein the streaming media system performs one or more audio processing functions.
  8. 8
A method for synchronizing a time of output of data at a plurality of destination devices (106) receiving packets of data from a source (104), the method comprising:broadcasting or multicasting a time check message (402, 406) from the source to the plurality of destination devices;upon receipt of the time check message, each destination device in the plurality of destination devices intercepting the time check message at a Link layer of an IP network stack and recording a receipt time for the time check message;sending an acknowledge message (408) from each destination device in the plurality of destination devices to the source, the acknowledge message indicating the recorded receipt time;low pass filtering values derived from acknowledge messages received from the plurality of destination devices to compensate for jitters due to transport jitter;using the low pass filtered values to determine contents of an adjust output time message;sending the adjust output time message to the plurality of destination devices;and receiving the adjust output time message at the plurality of destination devices, each of the plurality of destination devices using the contents of the adjust output time message to determine a time at which to output data.
