  1. 1
A brachytherapy treatment apparatus (2900, 3000, 3100) for treating tissue surrounding a cavity within a body, comprising:a core member (2910, 3010, 3110) comprising a proximal end and a distal end sized for introduction into a tract through tissue;a plurality of elongate members (2906, 3006, 3106) comprising lumens (2918, 3018) for receiving a source of radiation therein, the elongate members being movable from a collapsed configuration for introduction through a tissue tract to a target location, and an expanded configuration for providing a three dimensional array of pathways at the target location, each elongate member (2906, 3006, 3106) coupled at its distal end (2906b) to a hub (2909, 3009, 3109);a plurality of openings (2922, 3022) communicating with respective lumens for inserting the source of radiation into the lumens;a body member (2907, 3107) coupled to proximal ends (2906a) of the elongate members, the body member and the hub being movable relative to each other for moving the elongate members from the collapsed configuration to the expanded configuration.
  2. 4
The apparatus of any preceding claim, wherein the body member is slidably disposed around the core member.
  3. 8
The apparatus of any preceding claim, wherein each of the elongate members comprises a stiffening member for maintaining the elongate members in a desired orientation when the elongate members are moved from the collapsed configuration to the expanded configuration.
  4. 9
The apparatus of any preceding claim, wherein the distal end (3011) of the core member is sharpened to penetrate through tissue.
  5. 10
The apparatus of any preceding claim, the elongate members being spaced apart in the expanded configuration such that tissue at the target location invaginates between the elongate members.
  6. 11
The apparatus of any preceding claim, wherein the elongate members comprise a three dimensional array in the expanded configuration that provides multiple layers of radiation when the source of radiation is introduced into the tubular members.
  7. 12
The apparatus of any preceding claim, wherein the elongate members comprise first and second sets of elongate members (3106a, 3106b), the first set of elongate members (3106a) spaced apart about a central axis of the core member such that the first set of elongate members generally define a first maximum diameter in the expanded configuration, the second set of elongate members (3106b) spaced apart about the central axis such that the second set of elongate members generally define a second maximum diameter in the expanded configuration that is less than the first maximum diameter.
  8. 15
The apparatus of any one of claims 12 to 14, wherein an elongate member of the second set of elongate members is disposed between two adjacent elongate members in the first set of elongate members and closer to the central axis in the expanded configuration.
  9. 16
The apparatus of any preceding claim, wherein a button (2912, 3012) at the proximal end of the core member and/or a portion of the core member (2910, 3010) beyond the body member are detachable from the rest of the core member (2910, 3010) to reduce a profile of the apparatus after implantation.
