  1. 1
A method for assigning channels in a wireless system having a channel reuse of 1, said method comprising:determining (404) at a given point in time in a pair of interfering cells (101, 102) signal strength of mobile stations communicating with a basestation of the cell and determining which of the mobile stations in each said cell (101, 102) is communicating with the basestation of the cell with the highest signal strength, the basestations using an N=1 repeat pattern to give the channel reuse of 1;and assigning (406, 407, 408, 409) channels to said mobile stations based on said determined signal strength wherein said assigning comprises: in one of said interfering cells (101, 102) making the channel assignment such that a mobile station with a highest signal strength is assigned a particular channel and in the other interfering cell (101, 102) the assignment is that a mobile station with a lowest signal strength is assigned said particular channel.
  2. 15
A wireless system having a channel reuse of 1, comprising:means for determining (404) at a given point in time in a pair of interfering cells (101, 102) signal strength of mobile stations communicating with a basestation of the cell and determining which of the mobile stations in each said cell (101, 102) is communicating with the basestation of the cell with the highest signal strength, the basestations using an N=1 repeat pattern to give the channel reuse of 1;and means for assigning (406, 407, 408, 409) channels to said mobile stations based on said determined signal strength wherein said assigning means (406,407,408, 409) are configured to make the channel assignment in one of said interfering cells (101, 102) such that a mobile station with a highest signal strength is assigned a particular channel and in the other interfering cell (101, 102) such that a mobile station with a lowest signal strength is assigned said particular channel.
