Expanded beam connector

Abstract

An optical connector comprises a lens (101) and a ferrule assembly (102) including a ferrule (103) with an endface (103a). At least one fiber (104) in the ferrule has a fiber end (104a) presented at the endface. A housing (105) holds the ferrule assembly and the lens in a certain axial and radial relationship. A glass element (106) has a first surface (106a) and second surface (106b). The first surface is affixed to the endface such that the first surface is in physical contact with the fiber end. The second surface has an antireflective coating and defines a space (107) between the second surface and the lens.

  1. 1
An optical connector comprising:a lens (101);a ferrule assembly (102) comprising a ferrule (103) with an endface (103a) and at least one fiber (104) in said ferrule having a fiber end (104a) presented at said endface;a housing (105) for holding said ferrule assembly and said lens in a certain axial and radial relationship;anda glass element (106) having a first surface (106a) and second surface (106b), said first surface affixed to said endface such that said first surface is in physical contact with said fiber end, said second surface having an antireflective coating (106c) and defining a space (107) between said second surface and said lens.
  2. 7
The optical connector of any preceding claim, wherein said lens (101) is a ball lens (113).
  3. 8
The optical connector of any preceding claim, wherein said space (107) is an air gap (107a).
  4. 9
The optical connector of any preceding claim, wherein said glass element is affixed to said endface with adhesive.
  5. 10
The optical connector of any preceding claim, wherein said endface is profiled to define a protruding portion containing said fiber end.
