  1. 1
A packet decoding system configured to play out received packets of a real-time signal according to a playout schedule by decoding the received packets by a forward error correcting decoder (24), inserting erasure bits/frames in lieu of a late arriving packet to maintain a continuous information stream to the forward error correcting decoder, comprising:the forward error correcting decoder (24) is configured to decode the received packets according to the playout schedule that contain information coded with a forward error correcting code and to receive inserted erasure bits/frames in lieu of a late arriving packet, and maintain state information representative of a series of states of the forward error correcting decoder following the successive decoding of the information contained by the received packets;and a late-packet-arrival processing unit (26) configured to update the state information of the forward error correcting decoder based at least in part on information bits/frames contained in a late packet of a time epoch for which erasure bits/frames have been presented to the forward error correcting decoder (24), the late packet arriving at the packet decoding system later than its scheduled or required playout time according to the playout schedule.
  2. 2
The system of Claim 1, wherein the late-packet-arrival processing unit (26) comprises:a bit/frame buffer (28) configured to store a recent history of the information that has been presented to the forward error correcting decoder;and a bit/frame-buffer update unit (29) configured to update the bit/frame buffer in response to the arrival of the late packet.
  3. 3
The system of Claim 2, wherein the bit/frame buffer update unit (29) is configured to determine at least one time epoch to which the information in the late packet corresponds, and to replace any existing entries in the bit/frame buffer that correspond to such time epochs with the corresponding information in the late packet.
  4. 4
The system of Claim 2, wherein the late-packet-arrival processing unit (26) further comprises:a decoder state buffer (30) configured to store a recent history of the states of the forward error correcting decoder;and a decoder-state-buffer update unit (31) configured to update the decoder state buffer based at least in part on the updated information in the bit/frame buffer, wherein the updated information in the bit/frame buffer is based at least in part on information contained in the late packet.
  5. 5
The system of Claim 4, wherein the decoder-state-buffer update unit (31) is configured to update the decoder state buffer by recursively recomputing past states of the forward error correcting decoder based at least in part on the updated information in the bit/frame buffer.
  6. 6
The system of one of Claims 1 to 5, wherein said forward error correcting decoder (24) is a Viterbi decoder configured to decode information encoded with convolutional error correcting codes.
  7. 7
The system of one of Claims 1 to 6, further comprising a packet receive buffer (22) configured to receive and buffer received packets before they are presented to the forward error correcting decoder.
  8. 8
A method for playing out received packets of a real-time signal according to a playout schedule by decoding the received packets by a forward error correcting decoder (24), inserting erasures bits/frames in lieu of a late arriving packet to maintain a continuous information stream to the forward error correcting decoder, comprising the steps of:decoding by the forward error correcting decoder (24) information contained in the plurality of received packets that have been coded using a forward error correction code according to the playout schedule and receiving inserted erasure bits/frames in lieu of a late arriving packet;maintaining by the forward error correcting decoder (24) state information representative of a series of states following the successive decoding of the information contained by each of the plurality of received packets;receiving for a time epoch for which erasure bits/frames were presented to the forward error correcting decoder (24) a late packet that arrives later than its scheduled or required playout time according to the playout schedule and that also comprises information coded using the forward error correcting code;and updating by a late-packet-arrival processing unit (26) the state information based at least in part on information bits/frames contained in the late packet.
  9. 9
The method according to Claim 8, wherein updating the state information comprises updating a bit/frame buffer (28) based at least in part on the information contained in the late packet, wherein the bit/frame buffer holds a recent history of the information that has been decoded.
  10. 10
The method of Claim 9, wherein updating the bit/frame buffer (28) comprises determining the time epochs to which the information in the late packet corresponds, and replacing any existing entries in the bit/frame buffer that correspond to such time epochs with the corresponding information in the late packet.
  11. 11
The method of Claim 9, wherein updating the state information further comprises updating a decoder state buffer (30) based at least in part on the updated information in the bit/frame buffer, wherein the decoder state buffer (30) holds a recent history of the state information.
  12. 12
The method of Claim 11, wherein updating the decoder state buffer (30) comprises recursively recomputing the past state information based at least in part on the updated information in the bit/frame buffer.
  13. 13
The method of one of Claims 8 to 12, wherein the forward error correction code is a convolutional error correcting code.
  14. 14
