  1. 1
A method of transferring data in a wireless network, comprising:contending for and reserving (610) a transmit opportunity;determining (630) that some or usable portion of the transmission opportunity will remain once the data is transmitted, wherein the remainder of the transmission opportunity is transferred or handed off to another station;transmitting (640) a quality of service frame using a high throughput device, wherein the quality of service frame comprises a high-throughput control field that is set to identify a transmit opportunity handoff, wherein the handoff: is transmitted as part of or separate from the data being transmitted in the quality of service frame, and the high-throughput control field carries information relevant only to high-throughput devices;and wherein the high-throughput devices are enhanced over legacy devices, and the high-throughput control field is used only by high-throughput devices;and wherein the legacy devices are compliant with a wireless standard selected from the group consisting of 802.11a, 802.11e, 802.11i, and 802.11g.
  2. 9
An apparatus for transferring data in a wireless network, comprising a high throughput device configured to contend for and reserve (610) a transmit opportunity, to determine that some or usable portion of the transmission opportunity will remain once the data is transmitted, wherein the remainder of the transmission opportunity is transferred or handed off to another station, and to transmit (640) a quality of service frame comprising a high-throughput control field that is set to identify a transmit opportunity handoff, wherein the handoff is transmitted as part of or separate from the data being transmitted in the quality of service frame, wherein the high-throughput control field carries information relevant only to high-throughput devices;and wherein the high-throughput devices are enhanced over legacy devices, and the high-throughput control field is used only by high-throughput devices;and wherein the legacy devices are compliant with a wireless standard selected from the group consisting of 802.11a, 802.11e, 802.11i, and 802.11g.
