  1. 1
A method of providing media on-demand services over a network (204), the method comprising:receiving a request from a first device (206-1) of a plurality of devices (206-1, 206-2, 206-n) on the network (204), the request including an order for playback of a media content in a library, wherein a residing object pertaining to a beginning portion of the media content is locally stored on each of the plurality of devices (206-1, 206-2, 206-n);designating one or more devices (206-2, 206-n) of the plurality of devices (206-1, 206-2, 206-n) to provide, to the first device (206-1), distributed objects pertaining to the remaining portion of the media content;enabling the first device (206-1) to: (i) initiate playback of the media content using the residing object while concurrently receiving the distributed objects from the one or more designated devices (206-2, 206-n), and (ii) continue playing back the media content using the distributed objects once the playback using the residing object is completed, wherein any of the plurality of devices (206-1, 206-2, 206-n) may be enabled to initiate instant playback of the media content;wherein data blocks in the residing object are consecutive while data blocks in the distributed objects are non-consecutive.
  2. 4
The method of claims 1, 2 or 3, further comprising identifying a plurality of backup devices on the network (204), each of the plurality of backup devices providing redundancy to at least one of the one or more designated devices (206-2, 206-n) should the one of the one or more designated devices (206-2, 206-n) insufficiently supply one of the distributed objects to the first device (206-1).
  3. 5
The method of claims 1, 2 or 3, further comprising providing authentication information to facilitate secured communications between the first device (206-1) and the one or more designated devices (206-2, 206-n).
  4. 12
A system for providing media-on-demand services over a network (204), the system comprising:a plurality of devices (206-1, 206-2, 206-n) coupled to the network (204), each of the plurality of devices (206-1, 206-2, 206-n) including a storage element for storing at least a residing object pertaining to a beginning portion of a media content in a library;a server (202) coupled to the network (204) and configured to provide a response to a request from a first device (206-1) of the plurality of devices (206-1, 206-2, 206-n), wherein the request includes an order for playback of the media content, and wherein the response includes information identifying one or more of the plurality of devices (206-2, 206-n) being designated to provide distributed objects pertaining to the remaining portion of the media content to the first device (206-1);and wherein, after receiving the response, the first device (206-1) is configured to: (i) initiate playback of the media content using the residing object while concurrently receiving one or more of the distributed objects from the one or more designated devices (206-2, 206-n), and (ii) continue playing back the media content using the distributed objects once the playback using the residing object is completed, wherein each of the plurality of devices (206-1, 206-2, 206-n) is configurable to initiate instant playback of the media content.
  5. 13
The system of claim 13, wherein none of the distributed objects are provided by the server (202) to the first device (206-1) during playback of the media content.
