  1. 1
A method of authenticating a plurality of different users with access to a token (102) having a microprocessor therein to an authentication server (110), said method comprising:storing a master (S M ) seed in the token (102);and when any one of said plurality of users holds the token (102) and seeks to authenticate to the authentication server (110) using the token (102), (1) mathematically combining, within the microprocessor of the token (102), the master seed (S M ) stored within the token (102) with a unique identifier (UID 1 ) supplied for that user to generate a derivative seed for that user;(2) sending an authentication signal to the authentication server (110) based on the derivative seed for that user;and (3) sending the unique identifier (UID 1 ) supplied for that user to the authentication server (110);and wherein sending the authentication signal to the authentication server (110) based on the derivative seed for that user includes deriving an authentication code from the derivative seed for that user generated by the token (102) combined with a dynamic variable, the dynamic variable being at least one of time, a challenge value and a counter value, and sending the derived authentication code to the authentication server (110), the authentication server (110) having the same dynamic value, whereby it can validate the authentication code.
  2. 5
A system comprising means to implement a method as claimed in any preceding claim.
  3. 6
A computer program comprising instructions arranged, when executed, to implement a method or realise a system as claimed in any preceding claim.
  4. 9
The method of claims 1-4 or 8, wherein:mathematically combining, within the microprocessor of the token (102), the master seed (S M ) stored with a token (102) with the unique identifier (UID 1 ) supplied for that user to generate the derivative seed for that user includes mathematically combining the master seed stored within the token with the unique identifier supplied for that user as well as with a unique site identifier that identifies a site that that user is attempting to access.
