  1. 1
A radio-frequency identification, RFID, system (100) for use with a reader (106) that transmits activation energy to read a stack (104) of items, the system comprising:a plurality of RFID tags (110) each being mountable to one of the items (112) and including an RFID circuit (114) for generating tag energy when activated;characterised by a transmission line (120) comprising an activation conductor (132a) for carrying activation energy from the reader (106) to the plurality of RFID tags (110) and a separate tag conductor (132b) configured to carry tag energy from the tags (110);a stack antenna (148) operatively coupled with the transmission line (120), whereby the stack antenna (148) includes a receive section (152) operatively coupled with the activation conductor (132a) for receiving activation energy transmitted by the reader (106) and a radiate section (154) operatively coupled with the tag conductor (132b) for radiating tag energy carried by the transmission line (120);and a pair of amplifiers (150a, 150b), wherein one of the amplifiers (150a) is disposed downstream of the receive section (152) to amplify the activation energy (E)prior to being carried by the activation conductor (132a) to the tags (110) and wherein the other amplifier (150b) is positioned at or near the radiate section (154) to amplify the tag energy (T) prior to radiation, the transmission line (120) being positionable in coupling proximity to a plurality of the tags (110) when the plurality of the tags (110) are mounted to items (112) and when the items (112) are stacked, such that: when carrying activation energy, the transmission line (120) couples with and thereby enables activation of the plurality of the tags (110);and when the plurality of the tags (110) are activated, the transmission line (120) couples with and carries tag energy from the plurality of the tags (110).
  2. 3
The system of any one of claims 1 or 2 wherein the transmission line (120) is disposed on a piece of sheet material (134).
  3. 5
The system of any one of claims 1 or 2 wherein the stack antenna (148) and the transmission line (120) are mounted on a piece of sheet material (134).
  4. 6
The system of any one of claims 1 or 2, wherein each of the tags (110) includes a substrate (134) on which the RFID circuit (114) is disposed.
  5. 8
A method of reading radio-frequency identification, RFID, -enabled items (112), the method comprising:providing a load of a plurality of RFID-tagged items (112) stacked together, each of the RFID-tagged items (112) including: an item (112);and an RFID tag (110) mounted to the item (112) and including an RFID circuit (114) with an antenna (118) and a chip (116) for generating tag energy when activated;characterised by providing a transmission line (120) comprising an activation conductor (132a) that is configured to carry activation energy from a reader (106) and a separate tag conductor (132b) configured to carry tag energy from the tags (110);providing a stack antenna (148) operatively coupled with the transmission line (120), whereby the stack antenna (148) includes a receive section (152) operatively coupled with the activation conductor (132a) for receiving activation energy transmitted by the reader (106) and a radiate section (154) operatively coupled with the tag conductor (132b) for radiating tag energy carried by the transmission line (120);providing a pair of amplifiers (150a, 150b), wherein one of the amplifiers (150a) is disposed downstream of the receive section (152) for amplifying the activation energy (E) prior to being carried by the activation conductor (132a) to the tags (110) and wherein the other amplifier (150b) is positioned at or near the radiate section (154) for amplifying the tag energy (T) prior to radiation, positioning the transmission line (120) in operative proximately to at least a number of the RFID tags (110), such that: when carrying activation energy, the transmission line (120) couples with and thereby enables activation of the plurality of the tags (110);and when the plurality of the tags (110) are activated, the transmission line (120) couples with and carries tag energy from the plurality of the tags (110).
  6. 10
The method of any one of claims 8 or 9, wherein the transmission line (120) is disposed on a piece of sheet material (134) substantially vertically and adjacent to a stack of the RFID-tagged items (112) in the load, such that the transmission line (120) couples with the RFID tag (110) of at least some of the plurality of RFID-tagged items (112) in the stack.
