A continuously variable gear transmission

Abstract

A continuously variable gear is described having an input shaft (1), a plurality of traction balls (2) distributed radially around the axis, each traction ball (2) is mounted on an axle (3) passing there through, the axles (3) are tiltable in the radial grooves (4) in the housing (5) and support plate (6). To control the position of the traction balls (2), the axles are guided in curved slots (13) of a turnable iris plate (7). To control the axial placement of the traction balls (2), there is a rotatable input disc (8) positioned adjacent to the traction balls (2), a rotatable output disc (9) positioned adjacent to the traction balls (2) opposite the input disc (8), and a pre-spanning ring around the traction balls (2) such that each of the traction balls (2) is making three-point contact with the input disc (8), the output disc (9) and the pre-spanning ring (11), the contact surface of the pre-spanning ring (11) having a specific curvature larger than the radius of the traction balls (2).

  1. 1
A continuously variable gear transmission comprising a housing (5), an input shaft (1) connected to an input disc (8), an output shaft (10) connected to an output disc (9), a plurality of traction balls (2) each having a radius (r) and being distributed radially around the input and output discs (8,9), and a rotatable pre-spanning ring (11), said traction balls (2) each being mounted for rotation around a rotation axis, the angle of the rotation axes being controlled for controlling the transmission ratio of the gear transmission, and said traction balls (2) having three-point contact with the input disc (8) the output disc (9) and the pre-spanning ring (11), respectively, characterised by the pre-spanning ring (11) being mounted axially displaceable and having a curvature of the surface in contact with the traction balls (2), said curvature being larger than the radius (r) of the traction balls (2).
  2. 2
A continuously variable gear transmission in accordance with claim 1, characterised by said traction balls (2) being mounted on axles (3) for rotation thereon, said axles (3) extending pivotably through radial grooves (4) in said housing (5) and a support plate (6) and through spiral grooves (13) in an iris plate (7) for controlling the angles of the axles (3).
  3. 3
Continuously variable gear transmission in accordance with claim 1 or 2, characterised by further comprising an axial force generator between the input shaft (1) and the input disc (8).
  4. 4
Continuously variable gear transmission in accordance with claim 3, characterised by the forces of the axial force generator being transmitted internally from the input shaft (1) to the input disc (8) and via the traction balls (2) to the output disc (9) and through a trust bearing back to the input shaft (1).
  5. 5
Continuously variable gear transmission in accordance with any of the preceding claims, characterised by further comprising a support plate (6) having a minor rotational play around its ideal aligned position.
  6. 6
Continuously variable gear transmission in accordance with claim 5, characterised by further comprising flexible members, e.g. springs, for flexibly mounting the support plate (6) and forcing the support plate (6) towards its ideal aligned position.
  7. 7
Continuously variable gear transmission in accordance with claim 5 or 6, characterised by further comprising an actuator having an actuator housing connected to the support plate (6) and an actuator arm connected to the iris plate (7).
  8. 8
Continuously variable gear transmission in accordance with any of the preceding claims, characterised by the pre-spanning ring (11) being positioned on the outside of the traction balls (2).
  9. 9
Continuously variable gear transmission in accordance with any of the preceding claims, characterised by further comprising a lubrication system to lubricate and cool the transmission.
  10. 10
Continuously variable gear transmission in accordance with claim 9, characterised by said lubrication system also lubricating a driven unit connected to the output shaft (10).
  11. 11
Continuously variable gear transmission in accordance with any of the preceding claims, characterised by being used for driving a compressor, a ventilator.
  12. 12
Continuously variable gear transmission in accordance with any of the preceding claims, characterised by further comprising a disengagement mechanism disengaging the input disc (8) from the traction balls (2).
  13. 13
Continuously variable gear transmission in accordance with claim 12, characterised by comprising ramps (20) provided on the iris plate (18), said ramps forcing the input disc (8) to a position out of engagement with the traction balls (2).
  14. 14
Continuously variable gear transmission in accordance with claim 13, characterised by the disengagement being performed with the transmission in a low gearing position.
