    A communication infrastructure comprising:a local communication software application supporting multimedia packet data and having a local communication requirement, the local communication requirement of the local communication software application comprising one or more of minimum data rate, maximum allowed delay, desired link quality, minimum link quality, security/encryption requirements, associated standards supported, priority level, maximum error rate, data type, volume of data, and type of temporal communication demands, the type of temporal communication demands including periodic, spontaneous and continuous;a local management software application;a local end point device (151, 153, 155, 157, 159, 1011) adapted to execute the local communication software application and the local management software application, the local end point device including a plurality of communication interfaces (342, 343, 344, 345);a remote end point device (151, 153, 155, 157, 159, 1041) adapted to execute a remote communication software application, the remote endpoint device having a remote communication characteristic, the remote communication characteristic comprising a remote communication requirement associated with the remote communication software application and remote pathway characteristics associated with links coupled to the remote endpoint device;a plurality of local access point devices (131, 133, 135, 137, 1021, 1051, 1031, 1045) communicatively coupled to the local end point device via a corresponding plurality of independent links, the corresponding plurality of independent links having a corresponding plurality of local pathway characteristics;a packet switched communication backbone (103, 1003) communicatively coupled with each of the plurality of access point devices and the remote end point device;the local end point device further adapted to communicate through at least one of the plurality of local access points to reach with the remote end point device via the packet switched communication backbone;the local end point device further adapted to select the at least one of the plurality of local access points after considering the local communication requirement, the remote communication characteristic, and the corresponding plurality of local pathway characteristics;the local end point device further adapted to select a first communication pathway via the at least one of the plurality of local access points and a first communication interface of the plurality of communication interfaces to service a first portion of the multimedia packet data and a second communication pathway via a second local access point and a second communication interface of the plurality of communication interfaces to service a second portion of the multimedia packet data;and the local end point device further adapted to execute a second local communication software application, the local communication software application having a first priority and the second local communication software application having a second priority, and wherein the communication software application of the local end point device having the highest priority controls the selection of the at least one of the plurality of local access points.
