    Claims of equivalent WO 2006015349 A2 CLAIMS What is claimed is:1. A radio frequency identification (RFID) system for obtaining tag data from RFID tags, the system comprising: a plurality of interrogators, each operative in response to a control signal to transmit an RF interrogation signal;at least one receiver operative in response to the transmission of said RF interrogation signal by one of said plurality of interrogators within the vicinity of at least one RFID tag, to receive data from the at least one RFID tag;and at least one controller communicably coupled to said plurality of interrogators and to said at least one receiver, said controller including a database containing at least one parameter for each of said plurality of interrogators and said at least one receiver, said controller operative to dynamically coordinate the operation of said plurality of interrogators and said at least one receiver in view of the respective at least one parameter to control the operation of said plurality of interrogators and said at least one receiver.

    A radio frequency identification (RFID) tag data acquisition system, comprising:an RFID tag interrogator operative to transmit an RF interrogation signal for interrogating RFID tags;at least one RFID receiver, said at least one RFID receiver including an RF receiver component for receiving RF signals and an RF monitoring component, said RF receiver component being operative to receive said RF interrogation signal transmitted by said RFID tag interrogator, said RF monitoring component being operative to determine at least one characteristic associated with said received RF interrogation signal;and a controller communicably coupled to said RFID tag interrogator and said at least one RFID receiver;said at least one RFID receiver being operative to generate information indicative of said at least one characteristic and to forward said information to said controller;said controller being operative to utilize said information in at least one of: a) a determination of the operational status of said RFID tag interrogator;b) control of said RFID tag interrogator;c) control of said RF signal receiver component;and d) control of said RF monitoring component.

    A method of operating a radio frequency identification (RFID) system, the RFID system including a plurality of RFID readers, each reader being operable to transmit and receive RF signals for interrogating at least one RFID tag, and for receiving tag data in response to the interrogation of the tag, for use in determining a presence of RF interference between the plurality of readers while at least one of the readers performs tag interrogation operations, the method comprising the steps of:transmitting an interrogation signal by a first RFID reader, the transmitting step including transmitting a first RF signal on a first frequency channel by the first reader, the first reader being operable to transmit RF signals on a plurality of frequency channels;receiving a second RF signal by at least one second RFID reader, the second signal being representative of RF interference occurring between the first and second readers while the first reader transmits the first signal, the second reader being tunable to receive RF signals transmitted on the plurality of frequency channels;measuring a first level associated with the second signal received by the second reader;in the event the first level is greater than a specified threshold level, transmitting the first signal on a next frequency channel different from the first channel by the first reader;and repeating the receiving, measuring, and second transmitting steps until the measured level associated with the RF signal received by the second reader is less than the specified threshold level.

    A method of operating a radio frequency identification (RFID) system, the RFID system including a plurality of RFID readers, each reader being operable to transmit and receive RF signals for interrogating at least one RFID tag, and for receiving tag data in response to the interrogation of the tag, for use in determining an operational status of at least one of the plurality of readers, the method comprising the steps of:transmitting a first RF signal on a first frequency channel by a first RFID reader, the first reader being operable to transmit RF signals on a plurality of frequency channels;receiving the first signal on the first channel at a first angle of signal reception by a second RFID reader, the second reader being tunable to receive RF signals transmitted on the plurality of frequency channels;receiving the first signal on the first channel at a second angle of signal reception by at least one third RFID reader, the third reader being tunable to receive RF signals transmitted on the plurality of frequency channels;measuring first and second power levels associated with the first signal received by the second and third readers at the first and second angles of signal reception, respectively;generating a baseline power profile using the first and second power levels associated with the first signal received at the first and second angles of signal reception, respectively;repeating the transmitting, first and second receiving, measuring, and generating steps to generate a second power profile;comparing the second power profile to the baseline power profile;and determining the operational status of the first reader based on the comparison of the second power profile to the baseline power profile.

    A method of operating a radio frequency identification (RFID) system within an environment, the RFID system including a plurality of RFID readers, each reader being operable to transmit and receive RF signals for interrogating at least one RFID tag, and for receiving tag data in response to the interrogation of the tag, for use in characterizing RF interference within the environment, the method comprising the steps of:receiving a plurality of RF signals on a plurality of frequency channels by a plurality of RFID readers, wherein the plurality of channels define a frequency band, and wherein the plurality of received signals are representative of RF interference within the environment;sampling the plurality of RF signals over a specified time interval to obtain a plurality of time domain signal samples;transforming the plurality of time domain signal samples to corresponding frequency domain information;and characterizing the RF interference in the time domain and in the frequency domain using the plurality of time domain signal samples and the corresponding frequency domain information.

    A method of operating a radio frequency identification (RFID) system within an environment, the RFID system including a plurality of RFID readers, each reader being operable to transmit and receive RF signals for interrogating at least one RFID tag, and for receiving tag data in response to the interrogation of the tag, for use in determining a presence of signal dependent RF interference associated with at least one of the plurality of RFID readers within the environment, the method comprising the steps of:transmitting a burst of continuous sine wave (CW) by a first RFID reader;receiving an RF signal by at least one second RFID reader in response to the transmission of the CW by the first reader, the receiving step including filtering the RF signal by a variable sub-carrier filter to obtain a plurality of filtered versions of the received signal, each filtered version of the received signal corresponding to a respective sub-carrier frequency;measuring a power level associated with each filtered version of the received signal, thereby obtaining power level measurements of the received RF signal across the respective sub- carrier frequencies;and analyzing the power level measurements of the received RF signal across the respective sub-carrier frequencies to determine the presence of signal dependent RF interference associated with the first reader.

    A method of operating a radio frequency identification (RFID) system having at least one RFID tag for providing RFID tag data and at least one RF receiver for receiving RF signals containing said RFID tag data, said method comprising the steps of:determining a plurality of sub-locations within an environment in which said at least one RF receiver and said at least one RFID tag are located, each sub-location corresponding to at least a portion of at least one of a plurality of RF coverage regions, each coverage region corresponding to an area within which RFID tag data can be received by said at least one RF receiver;mapping the plurality of sub-locations to a plurality of predefined locations within said environment;receiving, at one of said at least one RF receiver, RFID tag data from one of said at least one RFID tag;mapping the RFID tag data to at least one of the sub- locations based on the RF coverage region associated with said at least one RF receiver that received said RFID tag data from said one of said at least one RFID tag;and determining the location of said one of said at least one RFID tag with reference to the predefined locations within the environment based on the mapping of said RFID tag data to the sub- locations, and the mapping of the sub-locations to the predefined locations.

    Apparatus for use in a radio frequency identification (RFID) tag data acquisition system including at least one RFID tag and at least one RFID receiver for receiving RFID tag data from said at least one RFID tag, said apparatus comprising:a controller operative to generate at least one parameter associated with operational characteristics of at least one of said at least one RFID receiver and said at least one RFID tag and to forward to said at least one of said at least one RFID receiver and said at least one RFID tag the respective at least one parameter, the respective at least one parameter being selected to avoid interference at at least one of said at least one RFID receiver and said at least one RFID tag.

    A method of operating a radio frequency identification (RFID) system, the RFID system including a plurality of RFID readers, each reader being operable to transmit and receive a plurality of RF signals for interrogating at least one RFID tag and for receiving tag data in response to the interrogation of the tag, for use in scheduling the respective RF signal transmissions and receptions of the plurality of readers, the method comprising the steps of:assigning at least one first time interval for RF signal transmission to each of the plurality of readers;assigning at least one second time interval for RF signal reception to each of the plurality of readers;assigning at least one frequency channel for RF signal transmission and reception to each of the plurality of readers;transmitting at least one first RF signal for interrogating at least one tag by at least one first reader, the first RF signal being transmitted on the frequency channel and during the first time interval assigned to the first reader for RF signal transmission;receiving at least one second RF signal from the tag in response to the RF signal transmission by the first reader, the second RF signal being received on the frequency channel and during the second time interval assigned to the first reader for RF signal reception;determining a presence of RF interference during at least one of the RF signal transmission and the RF signal reception on the at least one frequency channel assigned to the first reader for RF signal transmission and reception;and in the event RF interference is present during at least one of the RF signal transmission and the RF signal reception on the at least one frequency channel assigned to the first reader for RF signal transmission and reception, assigning at least one of a different first time interval for RF signal transmission, a different second time interval for RF signal reception, and at least one different frequency channel for RF signal transmission and reception to at least one of the plurality of readers, and repeating the transmitting, receiving, determining, and fourth assigning steps until the RF signal transmission and reception of the first reader is determined to be substantially free of RF interference.

    Α method of operating a radio frequency identification (RFID) system, the RFID system including a plurality of RFID readers, each reader being operable to transmit and receive a plurality of RF signals for interrogating at least one RFID tag and for receiving tag data in response to the interrogation of the tag, for use in scheduling the respective RF signal transmissions and receptions of the plurality of readers, the method comprising the steps of:assigning at least one first time interval for RF signal transmission to each of the plurality of readers;assigning at least one second time interval for RF signal reception to each of the plurality of readers;assigning at least one frequency channel for RF signal transmission and reception to each of the plurality of readers;transmitting at least one first RF signal for interrogating at least one tag by at least one first reader, the first RF signal being transmitted on the frequency channel and during the first time interval assigned to the first reader for RF signal transmission;receiving at least one second RF signal from the tag in response to the RF signal transmission by the first reader, the second RF signal being received on the frequency channel and during the second time interval assigned to the first reader for RF signal reception;and in response to a predetermined event, assigning at least one of a different first time interval for RF signal transmission, a different second time interval for RF signal reception, and at least one different frequency channel for RF signal transmission and reception to the at least one first reader.

    A method of operating a radio frequency identification (RFID) system, the RFID system including a plurality of RFID readers, each reader being operable to transmit and receive a plurality of RF signals for interrogating at least one RFID tag and for receiving tag data in response to the interrogation of the tag, for use in scheduling the respective RF signal transmissions and receptions of the plurality of readers, the method comprising the steps of:assigning at least one first time interval for RF signal transmission to each of the plurality of readers;assigning at least one second time interval for RF signal reception to each of the plurality of readers;assigning at least one frequency channel for RF signal transmission and reception to each of the plurality of readers;transmitting at least one first RF signal for interrogating at least one tag by at least one first reader, the first RF signal being transmitted on the frequency channel and during the first time interval assigned to the first reader for RF signal transmission;receiving at least one second RF signal from the tag in response to the RF signal transmission by the first reader, the second RF signal being received on the frequency channel and during the second time interval assigned to the first reader for RF signal reception, wherein transmitting and receiving of the first and second RF signals by the first reader are performed according to a plurality of RF operational requirements of the first reader;and in response to a change in the RF operational requirements of the at least one first reader, assigning at least one of a different first time interval for RF signal transmission, a different second time interval for RF signal reception, and at least one different frequency channel for RF signal transmission and reception to the at least one first reader.

    A radio frequency identification (RFID) system for obtaining tag data from RFID tags, the system comprising:at least one RF receiver for receiving RFID tag data from at least one RFID tag;and at least one controller communicably coupled to said at least one RF receiver, said controller including a database having at least one parameter defining at least one operational characteristic of said at least one receiver, said at least one parameter being associated with the respective RF receiver, said controller being operative to forward commands to said at least one receiver containing the respective at least one parameter to dynamically control the operation of said at least one RF receiver within said system.

    Apparatus for use in a radio frequency identification (RFID) tag data acquisition system, the system including at least one RFID tag and a plurality of RFID readers for interrogating the at least one RFID tag and for receiving RFID tag data from the at least one RFID tag in response to the interrogation of the at least one RFID tag, the apparatus comprising:a plurality of controllers, each controller being associated with a subset of the plurality of RFID readers, each RFID reader being associated with an RF interrogator and an RF receiver, each RFID reader having associated operational characteristics, each controller being operative to determine a first set of operational characteristics of each RFID reader included in the subset associated therewith that allow the RFID readers within the subset to concurrently operate while avoiding interference at the at least one RFID tag and at the RF receiver associated with each RFID reader within the subset, each controller being operative to provide the first set of operational characteristics of the RFID readers included in the subset associated therewith to each other controller included in the plurality of controllers, thereby providing an aggregate set of operational characteristics of the plurality of RFID readers to each controller, each controller being operative to determine a second set of operational characteristics of each RFID reader included in the subset associated therewith that allow the RFID readers within the subset to concurrently operate while avoiding interference at the at least one RFID tag and at the RF receiver associated with each RFID reader within the subset based on the aggregate set of RFID reader operational characteristics provided thereto, and each controller being operative to convey the second set of operational characteristics of each RFID reader included in the subset associated therewith to the respective RFID readers.
