Method and system for controlling a multi-application channel

Abstract

Methods and devices are provided to aid in the control of a channel used in communicating data packets between a first communication device and a communication device with which the first communication device is communicating. For an open session occurring on the channel, the channel can be in an active state or a dormant state. Controlling when the channel is brought down to the dormant state can help improve operating conditions such as battery life of a communication device. Time-out parameters associated with the communication device, each open session and packets being sent and received on the channel are used in determining when the channel is brought up to the active state or brought down to the dormant state.

24 claims: 12 independent, 12 dependent

  1. 1
A method for controlling a communication channel (120) used by a communication device (18) comprising:opening (300,400,500) a communication session for an application (22,26,28) operating on the communication device (18), the communication session being established on the channel (120) for communicating a packet between the application (22,26,28) of the communication device (18) and a device (130) with which the communication device (18) is communicating, wherein the channel (120) has an active state and a dormant state;during the opening (300,400,500) of the communication session, the application (22,26,28) providing a set of time-out parameters (24) to be associated with the communication session being opened for the application (22,26,28);and controlling the channel (120) based on the set of time-out parameters (24) and at least one of: time-out parameters of any other currently open communication session or sessions on the channel (120);a time-out parameter associated with the communication device (18);or a time-out parameter associated with a packet to be sent or received on the channel (120).
  2. 7
The method of any one of claims 3 to 5, wherein the time-out parameter value is updated at any time during the method.
  3. 8
The method of any one of claims 3 to 7, wherein if the time-out parameter value is set equal to a device time-out parameter value, updating the time-out parameter value based on a session time-out parameter value from the set of time-out parameters (24) associated with the open communication session for the application (22,26,28).
  4. 9
The method of any one of claims 3 to 7, wherein if the time-out parameter value is set equal to a session time-out parameter value from the set of time-out parameters associated with the open communication session for the application, updating the time-out parameter value based on a packet time-out parameter value of the packet being communicated.
  5. 10
The method of any one of claims 1 to 9, further comprising:determining when to send a packet from the communication device (18) to a device (130) with which the communication device (18) is communicating on a channel (120) depending on a send priority time-out parameter associated with any one or a combination of: the communication device (18), the open communication session and/or the packet to be sent.
  6. 14
The method of any one of claims 11 to 13, wherein the send priority time-out parameter can be updated at any time during the method.
  7. 15
The method of any one of claims 11 to 14, wherein if the send priority time-out parameter value is set equal to a device send priority time-out parameter value, updating the send priority time-out parameter value based on a session send priority time-out parameter value from the set of time-out parameters (24) associated with the open communication session for the application (22,26,28).
  8. 16
The method of any one of claims 11 to 14, wherein if the send priority time-out parameter value is set equal to a session send priority time-out parameter value from the set of time-out parameters (24) associated with the open communication session for the application, updating the send priority time-out parameter value based on a packet send priority time-out parameter value of the packet being communicated.
  9. 17
A computer readable medium having instructions stored thereon for execution by a communication device (18), the instructions comprising channel control logic adapted to implement the method of any of claims 1 to 16.
  10. 18
A communication device (18) comprising:an application layer (19) adapted to run at least one application (22,26,28,29,35,36);a radio management layer (21) comprising a data channel controller (30) adapted for opening communication sessions on a channel (120) between the communication device (18) and another device (130);a packet handler layer (20) adapted to support communication between the application layer (19) and the radio management layer (21);the data channel controller (30) adapted to receive time-out parameters (24) from an application of the at least one application (22,26,28,29,35,36) associated with an open communication session on the channel (120) and adapted to control the channel (120) based on the time-out parameters (24) and at least one of: time-out parameters of any other currently open communication session or sessions on the channel (120);a time-out parameter associated with the communication device (18);or a time-out parameter associated with a packet to be sent or received on the channel (120)
