  1. 1
Claims of equivalent WO 2005104008 A1 What is claimed is:1. A method for verifying authenticity of an article, the method comprising: producing a representation of a distribution pattern of randomly distributed taggant particles on the article;producing a match signal when said representation at least partially matches a pre-defined representation of said distribution pattern of said randomly distributed taggant on the article.
  2. 12
    13. An apparatus for verifying authenticity of an article, the apparatus comprising:means for producing a representation of a distribution pattern of randomly distributed taggant particles on the article;means for producing a match signal when said representation at least partially matches a pre-defined representation of said distribution pattern of said randomly distributed taggant on the article.
  3. 15
    16. The apparatus of any one of claims 14 to 15 wherein said means for producing said representation comprises means for exposing the article to electromagnetic radiation, said medium and said taggant particles being operably configured to react differently in response to said exposure to facilitate differentiating between said taggant particles and said medium.
  4. 24
    25. An apparatus for verifying authenticity of an article, the apparatus comprising:a detector operable to produce a representation of a distribution pattern of randomly distributed taggant particles on the article;a verification unit operably configured to produce a match signal when said representation at least partially matches a predefined representation of said distribution pattern of said randomly distributed taggant on the article.
  5. 27
    28. The apparatus of any one of claims 26 to 27 wherein said detector comprises a source operable to expose the article to electromagnetic radiation, said medium and said taggant particles being operably configured to react differently in response to said exposure from said source to facilitate differentiating between said taggant particles and said medium.
  6. 35
    36. A method for tagging an article, the method comprising:randomly distributing taggant particles over at least a portion of the article.
  7. 38
    39. The method of any of claims 37 to 38 wherein dispersing said taggant particles in said medium comprises dispersing said taggant particles in a medium operable to react differently to said taggant particles in response to exposure to electromagnetic radiation to facilitate distinguishing between said taggant particles and said medium.
  8. 46
    47. An authentication method comprising:tagging an item by randomly distributing a taggant in at least a portion of the item, the taggant being invisible to an unaided human eye under normal conditions;optically detecting said taggant by placing a detector in proximity to the item and generating data related to the distribution of the taggant;and verifying whether the data matches previous data from previously detected items.
  9. 52
    53. An authentication system for authenticating an item including a material having a taggant mixed with the material, the authentication system comprising:a detector operable to detect a location of the taggant without contacting the taggant;a database for storing a plurality of taggant locations corresponding to a plurality of items;and a verification unit for checking whether the location of the taggant on the item matches any of the plurality of taggant locations stored in the database.
  10. 53
    54. An authentication method comprising:tagging an item by randomly distributing a taggant in at least part of the item;detecting the taggant by placing a detector in proximity to the item and generating first data representing the taggant distribution;marking a code on the item representing the first data;and verifying the item at a future time by placing a detector in proximity to the item and generating second data representing the taggant distribution;and comparing the second data to the code on the item.
  11. 54
    55. A detector for detecting invisible taggant on an item, the detector comprising:an electronic camera operable to form an image of a taggant distribution on the item;means for causing the taggant to be detectable by the camera;and image processing means for detecting a registration mark on the item and registering the taggant distribution to the registration mark.
