  1. 1
A fibre optic monitoring system for detecting and locating disturbances along a predetermined length, which comprises:a first fibre optic sensor (1) which comprises an optical fibre (320;320a) which extends along said predetermined length and which continuously detects disturbances along the entire predetermined length and produces a first output, wherein said first fibre optic sensor (1) is an interferometric sensor a second fibre optic sensor (2) which comprises an optical fibre (320;320b) which extends along said predetermined length and which produces a second output which detects disturbances and their locations along the predetermined length means (190) for analyzing the output of said first fibre optic sensor means (260) for analyzing the output of said second fibre optic sensor characterized in that the optical fibre (320, 320a) of the first fibre optic sensor (1) and the optical fibre (320, 320b) of the second fibre optic sensor (2) are separate optical fibres (320a, 320b) which are located adjacent to one another or are a common optical fibre (320) of the first (1) and second (2) fibre optic sensors;the means (190) for analyzing the output of said first fibre optic sensor (1) are adapted to identify disturbances sensed by it which have at least one predetermined characteristic, and the means (260) for analyzing the output of said second fibre optic sensor are adapted to determine whether a corresponding disturbance was sensed at a time approximately corresponding to the sensing by the first fibre optic sensor (1) of a disturbance with said one predetermined characteristic, and, if so, the location of such corresponding disturbance along said predetermined length.
  2. 4
Apparatus as claimed in any one of claims 1-3, characterized in that the second fibre optic sensor (2) is a phase-OTDR sensor.
  3. 5
Apparatus as claimed in any one of claims 1-3, characterized in that the second fibre optic sensor (2) is a Brillouin-effect sensor.
  4. 6
A method for locating disturbances along a fibre optic detector system of predetermined length, which comprises:continuously sensing for disturbances along said predetermined length with a first optical fibre sensor (1) comprising an optical fibre and producing a first output signal from said first optical fibre sensor (1), when disturbances are detected, wherein said first optical fibre sensor (1) is an interferometric sensor analyzing said output signal, to determine if it has at least one predetermined characteristic, simultaneously sensing for disturbances using second fibre optic sensor (2) comprising an optical fibre which extends along said predetermined length and which produces a second output which detects disturbances and their locations along the predetermined length characterized in that said optical fibre (320, 320a) of the first fibre optic sensor (1) and said optical fibre (320, 320b) of the second fibre optic sensor (2) are separate optical fibres (320a, 320b) which are located adjacent to one another or a common optical fibre (320) of the first (1) and second (2) fibre optic sensors;and when a disturbance is found by said first fibre optic sensor (1) which has such predetermined characteristic, then analyzing the output of said second fibre optic sensor (2) to determine whether a corresponding disturbance was sensed at a time approximately corresponding to the sensing by the first fibre optic sensor (1) of said disturbance with said one predetermined characteristic, and, if so, determining the location of such corresponding disturbance along said predetermined length.
