A surgical device for measuring properties of an eye, comprising:a surgical microscope (12) providing a first field of view;a wavefront sensor (14) providing a second field of view, wherein the first field of view at least partially overlaps the second field of view, the wavefront sensor (14) comprising, an infrared light source (40);at least one diffractive optical component for producing a measurable image of a wavefront reflected from an eye positioned within an overlapping portion of the first and second fields of view, the surgical device (10) characterized in that the wavefront sensor (14) is removably attached to, and optically aligned with, the surgical microscope (12), the removable wavefront sensor (14) further comprising, a fastener (28) adapted to secure the wavefront sensor (14) to the surgical microscope (12);and an aperture-sharing element located along the optical path of the surgical microscope, wherein the aperture-sharing element is positioned to reflect at least a portion of infrared light from the infrared light source (40) to the eye and to redirect light that reflects from the eye to the at least one diffractive optical component, the aperture-sharing element being configured to transmit visible light from the eye to the surgical microscope.
