  1. 1
A method of determining location information for a node (10) connectable to a network 100, the method comprising:determining first distances from the node (10) to a set of global landmark nodes (GL1-GL2);determining second distances from the node (10) to a set of local landmark nodes (LL1 and LL4) proximally located to the node (10), by receiving an acknowledge message from the set of local landmark nodes (LL1 and LL4) receiving probe packets transmitted to the set of global landmark nodes (GL1-GL2), wherein the set of landmark nodes (LL1 and LL4) are in the routing paths traversed by the probe packets between the node (10) and the set of global landmark nodes (GL1-GL2);and by determining the second distances to the set of local landmark nodes (LL1 and LL4) in response to receiving the acknowledge messages;and determining location information for the node (10) based on the first distances and the second distances.
  2. 6
A computer system (700) connectable to a peer-to-peer network (600), the computer system (700) comprising:a processor (702) operable to determine a physical location of the computer system (700) in the peer-to-peer network (600) by determining distances to a set of global landmark nodes (GL1-GL2) and a set of local landmark nodes (LL1 and LL4) proximally located to the computer system (700) in the peer-to-peer network (600), wherein a processor (702) is operable to determine the distances to the set of local landmark nodes by receiving an acknowledge message from the set of local landmark nodes (LL1 and LL4) receiving probe packets transmitted to the set of global landmark nodes (GL1-GL2), wherein the set of landmark nodes (LL1 and LL4) are in the routing paths traversed by the probe packets between the node (10) and the set of global landmark nodes (GL1-GL2);and by determining the second distances to the set of local landmark nodes (LL1 and LL4) in response to receiving the acknowledge messages;and a memory (706/708) operable to store location information associated with the physical location for the computer system (700).
