Navigation system and method

Abstract

A navigation system comprising an apparatus and method for navigating a vehicle along a detour route when appropriate. A destination is set, and the current location, or site, is detected. Guiding is performed along an optimum route from the current location to the destination. When a traffic obstacle that requires a detour from the optimum route is detected, a detour to the destination that detours the traffic obstacle is searched. The detour is a route having the shortest time and/or the shortest distance from the current location to the destination. Guiding is performed for the detour route at a site located a prescribed distance from a branching point where branching is to be made from the optimum route to one of at least two detour routes.

11 claims: 5 independent, 6 dependent

  1. 1
A navigation system comprising:input means (7) operable to set a destination (D);location detector means (1, 2, 3) operable to detect a current location (P) of the vehicle;traffic information acquisition means (5, 6) operable to acquire traffic information, including an existence of a traffic obstacle (I) on an optimum route (R0) from the current location (P) to the destination (D);and control means (8) for searching for a detour (R1, R2) having at least one of the shortest time to the destination (D) and the shortest distance to the destination (D) in order to detour around the traffic obstacle (I) when the existence of the traffic obstacle (I) is detected;wherein the control means (8) is arranged to perform guidance related to the detour (R1) a prescribed distance (A, La) before a branching point (B1, B2) that branches from the optimum route (R0) to the detour (R1, R2).
  2. 5
A navigation system as claimed in any of claims 1-4, wherein the control means (8) is arranged to direct the vehicle along the detour (R1, R2) only when the optimum route (R0) to the destination is searched at a site (A) located the prescribed distance (La) from the branching site (Bi, B2) where branching is to be made from the optimum route (R0), and when the detour (R1, R2) for detouring the optimum route (R0) is searched.
  3. 6
A method for navigating a vehicle comprising:setting a destination (D);detecting a current location (P) of the vehicle;acquiring traffic information, including an existence of a traffic obstacle (I) on an optimum route (R0) from the current location (P) to the destination (D);searching for a detour (R1, R2) having at least one of the shortest time to the destination (D) and the shortest distance to the destination (D) in order to detour around the traffic obstacle (I) when the existence of the traffic obstacle (I) is detected;and performing guidance related to the detour (R1) a prescribed distance (A, La) before a branching point (B1, B2) that branches from the optimum route (R0) to the detour (R1, R2).
  4. 10
A system as claimed in any of claims 1 to 5 or a method as claimed in any of claims 6 to 9 wherein the prescribed distance (A, La) is based on a preparation time (Ta) for branching to the detour and a vehicle speed (V).
  5. 11
A vehicle having a system or using a method as claimed in any preceding claim.
