Fuel switching for dual fuel engine

Abstract

A vehicle powertrain (1) has an internal combustion engine (2) combusting first fuel (6) in a first mode or second fuel (5) in a second mode and generating driving torque to vehicle wheels (18). Method comprises supplying first fuel (6) into combustion chambers of the internal combustion engine (2) in the first mode, determining to switch from the first mode to the second mode based on vehicle driving condition, stopping to supply the first fuel (6) into the combustion chambers when it is determined to switch to the second mode, suspending fueling into the combustion chambers for a predetermined period, and resuming the fueling with the second fuel (5) after the predetermined period.

18 claims: 8 independent, 10 dependent

  1. 1
Method for controlling a vehicle powertrain (1) having an internal combustion engine (2) combusting first fuel in a first mode or second fuel in a second mode and generating driving torque to vehicle wheels (18), wherein the method comprising the steps of:supplying the first fuel (6) into combustion chambers of said internal combustion engine (2) in the first mode;determining to switch from the first mode to the second mode based on vehicle driving condition (#12);stopping to supply the first fuel (6) into said combustion chambers when it is determined to switch to the second mode (#15, #19, #20);suspending fueling into said combustion chambers for a predetermined period (#15, #19, #20);and resuming the fueling with the second fuel (5) after said predetermined period (#15, #19, #20).
  2. 4
The method of any one of the preceding claims, wherein said vehicle powertrain (1) further having an electric motor (10) generating driving torque to said vehicle wheels (18), wherein the method further comprises the step of increasing the driving torque from said electric motor (10) during the fueling suspension (#19, #20).
  3. 7
The method of any one of the preceding claims, wherein during the fueling suspension, said internal combustion engine (2) is still rotating to scavenge said combustion chambers.
  4. 8
The method of any one of the preceding claims, wherein:said first fuel is gasoline, alcohol, preferably ethanol, natural gas preferably compressed natural gas, liquidized propane gas, and/or other hydrocarbon fuels and/or said second fuel is hydrogen, preferably gaseous hydrogen, gaseous fuel, preferably compressed natural gas, and/or liquidized propane gas.
  5. 9
A control system (20) for a vehicle powertrain (1) comprising an internal combustion engine (2) combusting first fuel in a first mode or second fuel in a second mode and generating driving torque to vehicle wheels (18) and a fuel supply system (3, 4, 5, 6) configured to selectively supply the first fuel or the second fuel into combustion chambers of said internal combustion engine (2); said control system (20) being configured to control said fuel supply system to:supply the first fuel into combustion chambers of said internal combustion engine (2) in the first mode;determine to switch from the first mode to the second mode based on vehicle driving condition (#12);stop to supply the first fuel into said combustion chambers when it is determined to switch to the second mode (#15, #19, #20);suspend fueling into said combustion chambers for a predetermined period (#15, #19, #20);and resume the fueling with the second fuel after said predetermined period (#15, #19, #20).
  6. 12
The control system (20) of any one of claims 9 through 11, wherein said control system (20) is further configured to control said internal combustion engine (2) to rotate during the fueling suspension to scavenge said combustion chambers.
  7. 13
Vehicle powertrain (1) comprising:an internal combustion engine (2) combusting first fuel in a first mode or second fuel in a second mode and generating driving torque to vehicle wheels (18);a fuel supply system (3, 4, 5, 6) configured to selectively supply the first fuel or the second fuel into combustion chambers of said internal combustion engine (2);and a control system (20) of any one of the preceding claims 9 to 12.
  8. 17
The vehicle powertrain (1) of any one of claims 13 to 16, wherein:said first fuel is gasoline, alcohol, preferably ethanol, natural gas, preferably compressed natural gas, liquidized propane gas, and/or other hydrocarbon fuels and/or said second fuel is hydrogen, preferably gaseous hydrogen, gaseous fuel, preferably compressed natural gas, and/or liquidized propane gas.
