  1. 1
A method of handling Real-time Transport Protocol, RTP, media packets communicated between Voice over Internet Protocol, VoIP, terminals in real time, the method comprising:Checking, at a Real-time Transport Protocol, RTP, transmitting terminal (402) whether a communication payload generated during voice communication is a silence payload (31) or a voice payload (34);and if the communication payload generated is a voice payload (34): transmitting an RTP packet (S405 and S406);if the communication payload is a silence payload (31): accumulating, at the RTP transmitting terminal (S404) the communication payload instead of transmitting it, and, if the number of accumulated silence payloads (32) has reached a predetermined multi-frame limit (S403), combining the accumulated communication payloads to form an RTP packet and transmitting said RTP packet (S405 and S406).
  2. 8
A terminal communicating using a Voice over Internet Protocol, VoIP, system, the terminal comprising:a VoIP signaling processor (110) adapted to initiate or terminate a VoIP call by controlling a communication session with a communication correspondent;and a media processor (120) adapted to continuously transmit and receive packetized voice data to and from the correspondent terminal using a Real-time Transport Protocol, RTP, protocol to effect communication between the terminals;wherein the media processor (120) is adapted to check if a communication payload generated is a silence payload or voice payload and, if the communication payload generated is a silence payload: to accumulate (S404) silence payload generated during voice communication instead of transmitting the silence payload in real time, to combine the accumulated silence payload to form an RTP packet and to transmit said RTP packet when the number of accumulated silence payload reaches (S403) a multi-frame limit;and if the communication payload is a voice payload: to transmit the voice payload in real time.
