  1. 1
A mobile ad hoc network (20) further referred to as "MANET" comprising:a plurality of mobile nodes (21-28) each comprising a wireless communications device (30) and a controller (31) connected thereto;said controller (31) adapted to operate in accordance with a multi-layer protocol hierarchy (32') to, at an upper protocol layer (36'), being operable to establish a quality-of-service (QoS) threshold;at at least one intermediate protocol layer (40') below the upper protocol layer (36'), being operable to select at least one route for transmitting data to at least one destination mobile node (25) based upon the QoS threshold, and determine whether a QoS metric for the selected route falls below the QoS threshold;and at a lower protocol layer (41') below the at least one intermediate protocol layer (40') being configured to cooperate with said wireless communications device (30) to determine the QoS metric tor the at least one selected route, to transmit data to the at least one destination mobile node (25) via the at least one selected route, and to adjust signal transmission power based upon a determination that the QoS metric has fallen below the QoS threshold;characterized in that being operable to establish the QoS threshold at the upper protocol layer (36') comprises being operable to select the QoS threshold from among a plurality of different possible QoS thresholds based upon a type of given data to be transmitted to at least one destination node.
  2. 2
The MANET (20) of Claim 1 wherein, at the lower protocol layer (41'), said controller (31) also being adapted to cooperate with said wireless communications device (30) to adjust signal transmission gain in a desired direction based upon a determination that the QoS metric has fallen below the QoS threshold.
  3. 3
The MANET (20) of Claim 1 wherein said wireless communications device (30) provides an adjustable signal transmission pattern;and wherein, at the lower protocol layer (41'), said controller (31) also being adapted to cooperates with said wireless communications device (30') to adjust the signal transmission pattern based upon a determination that the QoS metric has fallen below the QoS threshold.
  4. 4
The MANET (20) of Claim 1 wherein, at the at least one intermediate protocol layer (40'), said controller (31) being adapted to encodes data prior to transmission;and wherein said controller (31) also adjusts an amount of error correction coding based upon a determination that the QoS metric has fallen below the QoS threshold.
  5. 5
The MANET (20) of Claim 1 wherein, at the lower protocol layer (41'), said controller (31) being adapted to cooperate with said wireless communications device (30) to modulate the data using a first modulation technique if the QoS metric is greater than or equal to the QoS threshold, and otherwise using a second modulation technique.
  6. 6
A method for operating a mobile node in a mobile ad hoc network (20) further referred to as "MANET", comprising a plurality of mobile nodes (21-28), in accordance with a multi-layer protocol hierarchy (32'), the mobile node comprising a wireless communications device (30), the method comprising:at an upper protocol layer (36'), establishing a quality-of-service (QoS) threshold;at at least one intermediate protocol layer (39') below the upper protocol layer (36'), selecting at least one route for transmitting data to at least one destination mobile node (25) based upon the QoS threshold, and determining whether a QoS metric for the selected route falls below the QoS threshold;and at a lower protocol layer (41') below the at least one intermediate protocol layer (39'), using the wireless communications device (30) to determine the QoS metric for the at least one selected route, causing the wireless communications device (30) to adjust signal transmission power based upon a determination that the QoS metric has fallen below the QoS threshold, and causing the wireless communications device (30) to transmit data to the at least one destination mobile node (25) via the at least one selected route;characterized in that establishing the QoS threshold at the upper protocol layer (36') comprises selecting the QoS threshold from among a plurality of different possible QoS thresholds based upon a type of given data to be transmitted to at least one destination node.
  7. 7
The method of Claim 6 further comprising, at the lower protocol layer (41'), causing the wireless communications device to also adjust signal transmission gain in a desired direction based upon a determination that the QoS metric has fallen below the QoS threshold.
  8. 8
The method of Claim 6 wherein the wireless communications device (30) provides an adjustable signal transmission pattern;and further comprising, at the lower protocol layer (41'), causing the wireless communications device (30) to also adjust the signal transmission pattern based upon a determination that the QoS metric has fallen below the QoS threshold.
  9. 9
The method of Claim 6 further comprising, at the at least one intermediate protocol layer (39'):encoding data prior to transmission;and adjusting an amount of encoding based upon a determination that the QoS metric has fallen below the QoS threshold.
  10. 10
The method of Claim 6 further comprising, at the lower protocol layer (41'), causing the wireless communications device (30) to modulate the data using a first modulation technique if the QoS metric is greater than or equal to the QoS threshold, and otherwise using a second modulation technique.
