  1. 1
A method (500) for determining in a wireless communications device (101) when to exit an existing coverage network, the method comprising:determining (504) a threshold boundary line;partitioning (514) an area into a first zone and a second zone, the area including at least a portion of a first coverage area for the existing coverage network and at least a portion of a second coverage area for a second coverage network proximate the existing coverage network, the first zone proximate a first side of the threshold boundary line oriented toward a geographical center for the existing coverage network and the second zone proximate a second side of the threshold boundary line;supplying (502) the wireless communications device (101) a plurality of sample points comprising geographical positions of the wireless communications device (101);measuring (506) a position of each sample point of the plurality of sample points with respect to the threshold boundary line;and maintaining (512) a running sum of the measured position of each sample point, wherein maintaining the running sum comprises the steps of: decrementing (516) the running sum for the measured position of each sample point in the first zone;and incrementing (516) the running sum for the measured position of each sample point in the second zone;comparing (520) the running sum to a terminal value;and exiting (520) the existing coverage network based upon the comparison.
  2. 13
A wireless communications device (101) for determining when to exit an existing wireless communications coverage network, the wireless communications device (101) comprising:a locator (102) having a locator output (104) configured to output device geographical sample positions;and a calculator (106) connected to the locator output (104), the calculator (106) utilizing a history of the device geographical sample positions to supply an exit control signal, the calculator (106) comprising: a comparison circuit (108) connected to the locator output (104), the comparison circuit (108) configured to select a first threshold boundary line, to partition at least a portion of the existing coverage network adjacent to the first threshold boundary line into a first zone, to partition at least a portion of a second coverage network adjacent to the first threshold boundary line into a second zone, to measure the difference between each device geographical sample position and the first threshold boundary line, to output a decrement control signal (118) based upon the measurement when a device geographical sample position is in the first zone, and to output an increment control signal (120) based upon the measurement when the device geographical sample position is in the second zone;a counting circuit (110) configured to receive the decrement control signal (118) and the increment control signal (120), to perform a mathematical function responsive to the decrement and increment control signals (118, 120), to compare a mathematical function result to a predetermined terminal value, and to supply the exit control signal in response to the comparison.
