  1. 1
A modular patient pod (200) for providing cantilevered support of a cancer patient (108) undergoing radiation treatment pursuant to a treatment protocol, the pod (200) comprising:a Iongitudinally-extending generally hemi-cylindrical support shell (212) extending from a shell proximal edge (214) through a shell longitudinal center section to a shell distal edge (216), the support shell (212) having a bottom transverse concave surface (220), a top transverse concave surface (218), a first upwardly extending lateral edge (222), and a second upwardly extending lateral edge (224);a proximal extension track (226) located on the shell proximal edge (214), wherein the proximal extension track comprises a plurality of apertures and is configured to be fastened to one or more pod attachments by pins or bolts inserted into the apertures;a distal extension track (228) located on the shell distal edge (216), wherein the distal extension track comprises a plurality of apertures and is configured to be fastened to one or more pod attachments by pins or bolts inserted into the apertures;and a positioner-pod connector (234) attached to the shell bottom surface between the shell proximal edge and the shell longitudinal center section.
  2. 7
The patient pod of any of claims 2 to 6, further comprising a second immobilization device.
  3. 11
The patient pod of any of claims 2 to 10, wherein the shell comprises a first treat-through material.
  4. 13
The patient pod of any of claims 2 to 12, wherein the treatment protocol comprises the delivery of proton beams to a targeted site within the patient.
  5. 16
The patient pod of any of claims 1, 14 and 15, further comprising a distal pod attachment (258, 270, 280, 290, 300, 310, 330) that engages with the distal extension track (228).
  6. 21
The patient pod of any of claims 1, 14 to 20, further comprising a proximal pod attachment (270, 280, 290, 320) that engages with the proximal extension track (226).
  7. 25
The patient pod of any of claims 1, 14 to 24, wherein the radiation treatment protocol comprises the delivery of proton beams to a targeted site within the patient.
  8. 29
The patient pod of any of claims 26 to 28, wherein the first low-density material comprises epoxy with microspheres.
  9. 30
The patient pod of any of claims 26 to 28, wherein the first low-density material comprises nylon.
  10. 31
The patient pod of any of claims 26 to 28, wherein the first low-density material comprises urethane.
  11. 32
The patient pod of any of claims 26 to 31, wherein the second lateral edge (224) comprises a second tapered edge and a second longitudinally-extending rail, the second rail comprising a second rail inferior portion that is complementary to the shape of the second tapered edge and a second rail superior portion that is rounded, the second rail comprising a second low-density material, wherein the second tapered edge facilitates the delivery of prescribed radiation beam doses through the second lateral edge (224) pursuant to the radiation treatment protocol.
  12. 35
The patient pod of any of claims 32 to 34, wherein the second low-density material comprises epoxy with microspheres.
  13. 36
The patient pod of any of claims 32 to 34, wherein the second low-density material comprises nylon.
  14. 37
The patient pod of any of claims 32 to 34, wherein the second low-density material comprises urethane.
  15. 38
The patient pod of any of claims 26 to 37, wherein the radiation treatment protocol comprises the delivery of proton beams to a targeted site within the patient.
