Method to decentralize the counting of abnormal call release events on a per cell base in digital cellular communication networks

Abstract

A method is described to collect performance measurements about events related to radio link deletion in a digital cellular communication network which deploys an active set of multiple radio links between a mobile equipment and the radio access network. Radio links of the active set are set up both inside the serving cell and towards one or more adjacent cells belonging to adjacent clusters controlled by respective radio network controllers. The various controllers are connected to one another in order to act either as master of the active set in communication with the core network or slave for managing directly controlled radio resources and executing requests from the master devoted to radio link set up or deletion. The master radio controller, when calling a slave for requesting a specific radio link deletion from the active set, also sends to it some information about the cause of that deletion. The slave radio controller when receives said cause information increments a performance measurement counter associated to the specific cause and to the specific cell the radio link deletion is requested for. Operatively, the 3GPP RNSAP Radio Link Deletion Request message is upgraded to include an Information Element used to specify the "Cause" of the deletion. Main release causes are the following: Abnormal connection release due to loss of uplink synchronization from the mobile.Radio link failure without connection release.Normal connection release for voluntary termination.Abnormal connection release due to excessive traffic.Radio link deletion due to RAB establishment failure. Periodically the network operator recovers all the counters so that he will be able to associate the specific radio link failure events to the specific cells (fig.9)

15 claims: 4 independent, 11 dependent

  1. 1
Method to collect performance measurements about events related to radio link deletion in a digital cellular communication network (UE, UTRAN, Core Network) deploying an active set of multiple radio links between at least a user equipment (UE) and the radio access network (UTRAN), the radio links being set up both inside the serving cell (NodeB, CellA) and towards one or more adjacent cells (NodeB, CellC) belonging to adjacent clusters controlled by respective radio controllers (S-RNC, D-RNC) which are connected to one another (Iur) in order to act either as master (S-RNC) of the active set in communication with the core network (1) or as slave (D-RNC) for managing directly controlled radio resources and executing requests from the master devoted to radio link set up or deletion, characterized in that:• the master radio controller (S-RNC), when calling a slave (D-RNC) for requesting a specific radio link deletion from the active set, also sends to it information about the cause of that deletion;and• the slave radio controller (D-RNC) when receives said cause information increments a performance measurement counter associated to the specific cause and to the specific cell the radio link deletion is requested for.
  2. 2
The method of the preceding claim, characterized in that said cause information includes the indication as to whether the voice and/or packet connection is released or not.
  3. 8
The method of one of the preceding claims, characterized in that said cause information is included in a radio link deletion request message.
  4. 9
A radio link deletion request message including the content of the 3GPP RNSAP radio link deletion request message, characterized in that it additionally includes an Information Element used to specify the cause of said deletion.
