29 claims: 9 independent, 20 dependent

  1. 1
A catheter (10) comprising:an elongated inner tubular member (24) including a proximal portion (33) and a distal portion (35) and defining an outer surface (25) and a lumen (15);and an elongated tubular reinforcing member (26) having an inner surface (27), the reinforcing member (26) being disposed about the proximal portion (33) of the inner tubular member (24) such that the distal portion (35) of the inner tubular member (24) is free of the reinforcing member (26), and such that at least a portion of the outer surface (25) of the inner tubular member (24) along the proximal portion (33) is spaced from the inner surface (27) of the reinforcing member (26), wherein a distal region (36) of the reinforcing member (26) is adhesively bonded, crimped, chemically bonded, thermally bonded, welded, soldered, or brazed to the inner tubular member (24);wherein the spacing between the outer surface (25) of the inner tubular member (24) and the inner surface (27) of the reinforcing member (26) is unfilled by any other structure of the catheter (10).
  2. 18
A method of manufacturing an elongate shaft of a catheter (10), the method comprising:providing an elongated inner tubular member (24) including a proximal portion (33) and a distal portion (35) and defining an outer surface (25) and a lumen (15);and coupling an elongated tubular reinforcing member (26) about the proximal portion (33) of the elongated inner tubular member (24) such that the distal portion (35) of the elongated inner tubular member (24) is free of the reinforcing member (26) , the elongated tubular reinforcing member (26) having an inner surface (27), and the elongated tubular reinforcing member (26) being coupled to the elongated inner tubular member (24) such that at least a portion of the outer surface (25) of the elongated inner tubular member (24) along the proximal portion (33) is spaced from the inner surface (27) of the reinforcing member (26), wherein a distal region (36) of the reinforcing member (26) is adhesively bonded, crimped, chemically bonded, thermally bonded, welded, soldered, or brazed to the inner tubular member (24), wherein the spacing between the outer surface (25) of the elongated inner tubular member (24) and the inner surface (27) of the elongated tubular reinforcing member (26) is unfilled by any other structure of the catheter (10).
  3. 20
The catheter or method of claims 17 or 19, wherein the tip structure includes one or more layers of material disposed on the distal portion of the inner tubular member.
  4. 21
The catheter or method of claims 2, 17 or 19, wherein the tip structure includes a layer of material comprising a reinforcement structure.
  5. 23
The catheter or method of claims 2, 17 or 19, wherein the tip structure includes a layer of polymer material.
  6. 25
The catheter or method of claims 2, 17 or 19, wherein the tip structure includes a coil disposed about the distal portion of the inner tubular member, and a layer of polymer material disposed about the coil.
  7. 26
The catheter or method of claims 1, 17 or 18, wherein the distal portion of the inner tubular member has a length in the range of about 1 cm or greater.
  8. 27
The catheter or method of claims 1, 17 or 18, wherein the distal portion of the inner tubular member has a length in the range of about 2 cm or greater.
  9. 28
The catheter or method of claims 1, 17 or 18, wherein the reinforcing member includes a distal region and a proximal region, and wherein the distal region includes a plurality of apertures therein, while the proximal region is free of a plurality of apertures defined therein.
  10. 29
The catheter or method of claims 1, 17 or 18, wherein the reinforcing member is disposed over the entire proximal portion of the inner tubular member.
