Methods and systems for detecting flash rate of surrounding lights for controlling camcorder frame rate

Abstract

Methods and systems for determining the frequency of the AC power supply of any pulsating light, such as fluorescent lights, for different purposes such as adjusting a camcorder's frame rate, is described in detail herein. In one embodiment a method is described that determines the frequency of the power supply, using a single sampling rate. In another embodiment two concurrent samplings of different rates are employed to determine the power supply frequency. Additionally, two exemplary systems describe the implementations of two embodiments of the presented methods.

  1. 1
A method of detecting the frequency of a pulsating light connected to an AC power supply, comprising:sampling the intensity of the pulsating light at equal intervals;determining whether the samples are time-varying;concluding, if the samples are not time-varying, that the light frequency is an integer multiple of the sampling frequency;and concluding, if the samples are time-varying, that the light frequency is not an integer multiple of the sampling frequency.
  2. 2
A method of detecting whether a pulsating light is connected to a 50-Hz or to a 60-Hz AC power supply, comprising:sampling the intensity of the pulsating light at equal intervals;determining whether the samples are time varying;concluding, if the samples are not time-varying, that the light frequency is 50-Hz if the sampling rate is a factor of 100, and that the light frequency is 60-Hz if the sampling rate is a factor of 120;and concluding, if the samples are time-varying, that the light frequency is neither 50-Hz nor 60-Hz.
  3. 3
A method of determining whether a pulsating light is connected to a 50-Hz or to a 60-Hz AC power supply, comprising:simultaneously taking two samples of the intensity of the pulsating light, one at 100 samples per second and the other at 120 samples per second;determining whether either sample is time-varying;and concluding that the light frequency is 50-Hz if the 100 per second samples are not time varying, and that the light frequency is 60-Hz if the 120 per second samples are not time varying.
  4. 5
A method of detecting the frequency of a fluorescent light connected to an AC power supply, comprising:sampling the intensity of the fluorescent light at equal intervals;determining whether the samples are time-varying;concluding, if the samples are not time-varying, that the light frequency is an integer multiple of the sampling frequency;and concluding, if the samples are time-varying, that the light frequency is not an integer multiple of the sampling frequency.
  5. 6
A method of determining whether a fluorescent light is connected to a 50-Hz or to a 60-Hz AC power supply, comprising:sampling the intensity of the pulsating light at equal intervals;determining whether the samples are time-varying;concluding, if the samples are not time-varying, that the light frequency is 50-Hz if the sampling rate is a factor of 100, and that light frequency is 60-Hz if the sampling rate is a factor of 120;and concluding, if the samples are time-varying, that the light frequency is neither 50-Hz nor 60-Hz.
  6. 7
The method of any of the above claims wherein the sampling rate is a factor of 100.
  7. 8
The method of any of the above claims wherein the sampling rate is a factor of 120.
  8. 9
The method of any of the above claims wherein two samples of the light intensity are taken at different rates.
  9. 10
The method of any of the above claims wherein the sampling is performed using light sensors.
  10. 11
The method of any of the above claims wherein the method is implemented by a camcorder to control the camcorder's frame speed.
  11. 12
The method of any of the above claims wherein the pulsating light flashes at each half cycle of the AC power supply.
  12. 14
A system of determining whether a pulsating light is connected to a 50-Hz or to a 60-Hz AC power supply, comprising:a light intensity measuring device;a memory element;a processing element;and an arrangement in which: the light intensity is sampled at regular intervals at a sampling rate that is either a factor of 100 or 120;at least one of the samples is kept in the memory;samples are processed to determine if they are time-varying;and if the samples are not time varying, the processing element concludes that the power supply is 50-Hz if the sampling rate has been a factor of 100, and that the power supply is 60-Hz if the sampling rate has been a factor of 120.
  13. 15
A system of determining whether a pulsating light is connected to a 50-Hz or to a 60-Hz AC power supply, comprising:two light intensity measuring devices;a memory element;a processing element;and an arrangement in which: the light intensity is sampled by the two light intensity measuring devices, one at the rate of 100 and the other at 120 samples per second;at least one sample of each device is kept in the memory;samples are processed to determine if they are time-varying;and if samples of one device are not time-varying, the processing element concludes that the power supply is 50-Hz if the sampling rate has been a factor of 100, and that the power supply is 60-Hz if the sampling rate has been a factor of 120.
