  1. 1
An apparatus for use with a minimally invasive medical procedure into human breast tissue, the apparatus comprising:a cannula (423 /1614) formed of a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) compatible material and including an open proximal end and a lateral aperture (102 /278 /426 /600/620 /1302 /1502 /1844 /I878 /1912 /1952 /2004);an obturator (24 /268 /440 /606 /626 /646 /656 /806 /876 /896 /916 /926 /936 /1224 /1324 /1424 /1524 /1600 /1630 /1660 /1830 /1874 /1900 /1940) comprising a shaft formed of MRI compatible material and sized for insertion into the cannula and including a longitudinal portion proximate (649 /1229) to the lateral aperture of the cannula when thus inserted to control prolapsing of tissue therein;an MRI imagable portion (807 /857 /913) of the obturator proximate to the lateral aperture of the cannula accentuating identification thereof;and a lumen (444) formed in the obturator communicating between a proximal portion external to the human breast tissue and the lateral aperture of the cannula.
  2. 3
The apparatus of any one of the claims 1 and 2, further comprising a piercing tip (270 /449 /604 /624 /644 /804 /874 /1602 /1662 /1702) formed of an MRI compatible material attached to a distal end of a selected one of the cannula and the obturator.
  3. 4
The apparatus of any one of the claims claim 1 to 3, wherein a selected one of the cannula, the obturator and the piercing tip comprises a liquid crystal polymer.
  4. 12
The apparatus of any one of the claims 1 and 2, wherein a selected one of the cannula and the obturator comprise a liquid crystal polymer.
  5. 13
The apparatus of any one of the claims 1 and 2, wherein a patient has a body portion localized within a localization fixture (16) having a guidance portion (20), the apparatus further comprising:a core biopsy device (14) including an elongate probe (100) having a sample aperture (104);a sleeve (422) comprising the cannula (423), wherein the sleeve is sized to receive the elongate probe (100) from a proximal direction, including an aperture (426) aligned with the sample aperture of an inserted elongate probe (104), and including a proximal portion operatively configured for engagement and guidance by the localization fixture;a piercing tip (449) distally attached to a selected one of the sleeve and the obturator;wherein the obturator is sized to constrain entry of tissue into the sleeve curing penetration of tissue
