  1. 1
An electrosurgical apparatus (10) for coagulating tissue, the apparatus being insertable through an endoscopic tube, said apparatus comprising:an elongated flexible tube (30) having a tube proximal end (32) and a tube distal end (34) and defining a longitudinal axis;a sleeve (40) that is selectively extendable through the tube (30), the sleeve (40) including a sleeve distal end (41) and being movable from a first position in which the sleeve distal end (41) is inserted into the tube, whereby it is disposed in a generally rectilinear fashion relative to the tube longitudinal axis, to a second position in which the sleeve distal end (41) is extended distally of the tube (30) and in which it is configured, in operation of the electrosurgical apparatus, to direct pressurized ionizable gas (28) flowing through the sleeve (40) at an angle with respect to the longitudinal axis;at least one electrode (48) mounted proximal to the distal end (41) of the sleeve (40) for ionizing pressurized ionizable gas;a corona electrode (275) disposed proximate the distal end of the sleeve (40);and a dielectric sleeve (270) disposed between the at least one electrode (48) and the corona electrode (275), wherein the sleeve (40) is configured and arranged through the tube (30) so that the angle (Sx) of the distal end (41) of the sleeve (40) relative to the longitudinal axis progressively changes as the distance (x) that the distal end (41) of the sleeve (40) extends from the tube (30) changes, and wherein the sleeve (40) is a hollow shape memory alloy sleeve having a generally curved-tube austenite configuration and displaying stress-induced martensite behavior, the hollow sleeve (40) being at least partially restrained in a deformed stress-induced martensite configuration by the tube (30) when extending therethrough, and wherein extension of a portion of a hollow sleeve (40) from the distal end (34) of the tube (30) unstrains the extended portion from the deformed austenite configuration to a generally curved-tube configuration such that the extended unstrained portion can direct pressurized ionisable gas (28) flowing through the tube (30) at an angle with respect to the longitudinal axis.
  2. 5
The electrosurgical apparatus according to any one of the preceding claims, further comprising a wire (260) connected to the distal end (234) of the tube (230), the wire being movable from a first generally relaxed position in which the distal end (234) of the tube (230) is disposed in a generally rectilinear fashion relative to the tube longitudinal axis to a second retracted position in which the distal end (234) of the tube (230) is configured, in use of the surgical apparatus, to direct pressurized ionizable gas (28) flowing through the tube (230) at an angle with respect to the longitudinal axis.
  3. 11
The electrosurgical apparatus according to any one of claims 1 to 9, wherein the extended portion of the sleeve (40) can flex along an entire length thereof.
