Impedance imaging devices and multi-element probe

Abstract

A multi-element probe for providing an electrical connection to a tissue surface comprising: a plurality of individual conductive sensing elements (62), each having a front portion suitable for contact with the tissue surface, a plurality of conductive elements (51, 52) providing an electrical connection to the respective individual sensing elements and a partition or spacing separating the individual sensing elements such that when the individual probes contact the tissue surface they are substantially isolated from each other.

13 claims: 10 independent, 3 dependent

  1. 1
Apparatus for electrical impedance testing of a breast region of a patient, comprising:an electrode adapted for providing electrical signals to the patient;a multi-element probe, including a rectangular matrix of a plurality of sensing elements, for acquiring electrical signals from the breast region responsive to the provided signals;and a processor adapted to produce an impedance map of a breast area, responsive to signals acquired through a plurality of elements of the multi-element probe and to determine a single value of an impedance measure representative of a region of interest of the map, which includes a plurality of pixels.
  2. 4
Apparatus according to any of claims 1-3, comprising an input interface adapted to receive a user indication of the region for which the value of the impedance measure is determined.
  3. 5
Apparatus according to any of claims 1-4, wherein the processor is adapted to compare the single value of the impedance measure of the breast region to an impedance value associated with a reference region.
  4. 6
Apparatus according to any of claims 1-5, wherein the processor is adapted to determine values of local impedance measures separately for each of the plurality of the probe elements used in determining the single value, and to determine the single impedance measure as a function of the local impedance measures of the plurality of elements.
  5. 8
Apparatus according to any of claims 1-7, wherein the probe comprises a flat multi-element probe in which substantially all the elements are oriented in a same direction.
  6. 9
Apparatus according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the impedance measure comprises a phase.
  7. 10
Apparatus according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the impedance measure comprises a polychromatic measure.
  8. 11
Apparatus according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the processor is adapted to determine a specific frequency whose value contrasts between malignant and non-malignant tissue and use the specific frequency in producing the map.
  9. 12
Apparatus according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the processor is adapted to determine a specific frequency whose value contrasts between malignant and non-malignant tissue and use the specific frequency in determining the single value.
  10. 13
Apparatus according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the impedance measure of the region differentiates between malignant and non-malignant tissue.
