Mobile director

Abstract

Methods and apparatus for processing registration requests by a Home Agent supporting Mobile IP are disclosed. A registration request is received from each of a plurality of Mobile Nodes, the registration request specifying a care-of address, which may be allocated by the Foreign Agent. A binding is established between each of the plurality of Mobile Nodes and the associated care-of address, each of the plurality of Mobile Nodes being associated with one another. For instance, the plurality of Mobile Nodes may be statically or dynamically assigned the same Home Address. A tunnel is then created between the Home Agent and the care-of address for each of the plurality of Mobile Nodes, thereby enabling a server request to be distributed by the Home Agent to one of the plurality of Mobile Nodes or to a cluster of Mobile Nodes (e.g., associated with the care-of address) via the associated tunnel. For instance, a server request addressed to the Home Address may be forwarded directly to one of the Mobile Nodes assigned that Home Address. Alternatively, when an address such as the care-of address is associated with multiple Mobile Nodes, the Foreign Agent may perform a second level of dispatching such that the server request is dispatched to one of the Mobile Nodes in the cluster.

  1. 1
A method of operating a Foreign Agent (308, 310) to dispatch a server request, the method comprising:receiving a server request from a Home Agent (306), the server request being addressed to a cluster of Mobile Nodes (302, 304) having the same home address and the same care-of address, the cluster of Mobile Nodes (302, 304) including a plurality of Mobile Nodes (302, 304);selecting one of a the plurality of Mobile Nodes (302, 304) in the cluster of Mobile Nodes (302, 304);and forwarding the server request to the selected one of the plurality of Mobile Nodes (302, 304).
  2. 10
A method of operating a Home Agent (306) in a Mobile IP system in which care-of addresses are allocated to Mobile Nodes (302, 304) by a Foreign Agent (308, 310), the method comprising:receiving a first registration request from one of a first plurality of Mobile Nodes (302, 304), the first registration request including a home address and a first care-of address associated with the first plurality of Mobile Nodes (302, 304);receiving a second registration request from one of a second plurality of Mobile Nodes (302, 304), the second registration request including the same home address and a second care-of address associated with the second plurality of Mobile Nodes (302, 304);establishing a binding between the home address and the care-of address identified in each registration request that has been received such that one or more bindings are generated between the home address and one or more care-of addresses;tunnelling packets between the Home Agent (306) and the care-of address identified in each of the one or more bindings, thereby enabling a server request addressed to the home address to be distributed by the Home Agent (306) to one of the care-of addresses;receiving a server request from a Correspondent Node;forwarding the server request to the first care-of address associated with the first plurality of Mobile Nodes (302, 304) or the second care-of address associated with the second plurality of Mobile Nodes (302, 304), thereby enabling the packets to be forwarded to one of the first plurality of Mobile Nodes (302, 304) or one of the second plurality of Mobile Nodes (302, 304);receiving first load information for the first plurality of Mobile Nodes (302, 304), the first load information indicating load capacity of the first plurality of Mobile Nodes (302, 304);receiving second load information for the second plurality of Mobile Nodes (302,304), the second load information indicating load capacity of the second plurality of Mobile Nodes (302, 304);and ascertaining from the first load information and the second load information whether to forward the packet to the first care-of address or the second care-of address.
  3. 31
A method of operating a mobile IP system which uses a method in accordance with claim 10, wherein the care-of address is allocated to each Mobile Node (302, 304) by a hierarchical mobile IP Mobility Anchor Point.
  4. 32
A method of operating a mobile IP system which uses a method in accordance with claim 10, wherein each of the plurality of Mobile Nodes (302, 304) are servers.
  5. 43
A computer-readable medium storing thereon computer readable instructions for programming a network device to carry out a method in accordance with any of claims 1 to 42.
  6. 44
A signal carrying computer readable instructions for programming a network device to carry out a method in accordance with any of claims 1 to 42.
  7. 45
A network device (306) supporting Mobile IP, the device comprising:means for receiving a server request from a Home Agent (306), the server request being addressed to a cluster of Mobile Nodes (302, 304) each having the same home address and the same care-of address, the cluster of Mobile Nodes (302, 304) including a plurality of Mobile Nodes (302, 304);means for selecting one of the plurality of Mobile Nodes (302, 304) in the cluster of Mobile Nodes (302, 304);and means for forwarding the server request to the selected one of the plurality of Mobile Nodes (302, 304).
