Method and apparatus to enhance the probability of successful emergency call completion in a mobile station

Abstract

A method and apparatus for enhancing the probability of a successful emergency call completion and emergency callback on a mobile station in a network, the method comprising the steps of: during an emergency call attempt, monitoring whether the mobile station has received a non-voice service request from the network and, if yes, ignoring the non-voice service request. Further, during a callback period, monitoring whether the mobile station has received a service request from the network and, if yes, ignoring the service request if the service request is a non-voice service request that is anything but a position location service request. Further, during a callback period, monitoring whether a user attempts to initiate a non-voice service request that is anything but a position location service request, and if yes ignoring the non-voice service request.

21 claims: 8 independent, 13 dependent

  1. 1
A method of enhancing the probability of a successful emergency call completion on a mobile station (20, 200) in a network (100, 219), comprising the steps of:during an emergency call attempt, monitoring whether the mobile station (20, 200) has received a non-voice service request from the network (100, 219) and, if yes, ignoring said non-voice service request.
  2. 6
The method of any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the mobile station (20, 200) is allowed to acquire any network regardless of whether the network is preferred.
  3. 8
The method of any one of claims 1 to 7, further comprising the steps of:sending an emergency call request to the network (100, 219);checking whether the emergency call request was successful;if said emergency call request was unsuccessful, checking whether the user aborted the emergency call request;and if said user did not abort said emergency call request, attempting to acquire a new system.
  4. 9
A method of enhancing the probability of a successful emergency callback to a mobile station (20, 200) in a network (100, 219) from an emergency service centre, the method comprising the steps of:during a callback period, monitoring whether the mobile station (20, 200) has received a service request from the network (100, 219) or a user attempts to initiate a non-voice service request and, if yes, ignoring said service request from the network (100, 219) or said user initiated non voice service request if said service request is a non-voice service request that is anything but a position location service request.
  5. 14
A mobile station (20, 200) for enhancing the probability of successful emergency call completion to a network (100, 219), the mobile station comprising:a communications subsystem (211), said communications subsystem comprising a receiver (212), a transmitter (214) and a digital signal processor (220);a microprocessor (238) communicating with said digital signal processor (220) of said communications subsystem (211);user input and output means (222, 232, 234) communicating with said microprocessor (238);memory (224, 226) communicating with said microprocessor (238);and an emergency service module (246), said emergency service module (246) communicating with both said digital signal processor (220) and said microprocessor (238), wherein said emergency service module (246) is arranged to monitor whether the mobile station (20, 200) has received a non-voice service request from the network (100, 219) during an emergency call attempt and, if yes, to ignore said non-voice service request.
  6. 17
The mobile station (20, 200) of any one of claims 14 to 16, further comprising a subscriber identity module/removable user identity module interface (244).
  7. 19
A mobile station (20, 200) for enhancing the probability of a successful emergency callback to a mobile station in a network (100, 219) from an emergency service centre, the mobile station comprising:a communications subsystem (211), said communications subsystem comprising a receiver (212), a transmitter (214) and a digital signal processor (220);a microprocessor (238) communicating with said digital signal processor (220) of said communications subsystem (211);user input and output means (222, 232, 234) communicating with said microprocessor (238);memory (224, 226) communicating with said microprocessor (238);and an emergency service module (246), said emergency service module (246) communicating with both said digital signal processor (220) and said microprocessor (238), wherein said emergency service module (246) is arranged to monitor whether the mobile station (20, 200) has received a service request from the network (100, 219) or a user attempts to initiate a non-voice service request during a callback period and, if yes, to ignore said service request from the network (100, 219) or said user initiated non voice service request if said service request is a non-voice service request that is anything but a position location service request.
  8. 20
A computer program product for enhancing the probability of successful emergency call completion to a network (100, 219) and/or successful callback from an emergency service centre to a mobile station (20, 200), the computer program product comprising a computer readable medium (224) embodying program code means executable by a processor (238) of the mobile station (20, 200) for implementing the method of any one of claims 1 to 8 and/or the method of any one of claims 9 to 13.
