    A method of assigning a node identification to an audio-related device in a network of multiple audio-related devices, the method comprising the steps of:powering up a first audio-related device in the network;generating a first test node identification for the first audio-related device;broadcasting the first test node identification to the other devices over the network;determining, based on notifications from the other devices in the network, whether the first test node identification is a unique node identification in the network;if the first test node identification is not a unique node identification, generating a new first test node identification and repeating the broadcasting and determining steps until the first test node identification is a unique node identification in the network;if the first test node identification is a unique node identification, assigning the first test node identification as a first node identification to the first audio-related device, characterized in that the steps of generating the first test node identification and the new first test node identification for the first audio-related device comprises generating a random node identification which is independent of a network interface of the first audio-related device.

    The method as in any of claims 1-4, further comprising the step of invalidating the first node identification when the first audio-related device powers down.

    An audio-related system comprising:a first audio-related device adapted to communicate over a network;one or more other audio-related devices respectively adapted to communicate over the network;wherein the first audio-related device is adapted to power up in the network, wherein the first audio-related device is adapted to generate a first test node identification for the first audio-related device, wherein the first audio-related device is adapted to broadcast the first test node identification to the one or more other audio-related devices over the network, wherein the first audio-related device is adapted to determine, based on notifications from the one or more other audio-related devices, whether the first test node identification is a unique node identification in the network, the first audio-related device is adapted to generate a new first test node identification and to repeat the broadcasting and the determining until the first test node identification is determined to be a unique node identification in the network, if the first test node identification is not a unique node identification, the first audio-related device is adapted to assign the first test node identification as the first node identification to the first audio-related device, if the first test node identification is a unique node identification, characterized in that the first audio-related device generates the first test node identification and the new first test node identification for the first audio-related device by generating a random node identification which is independent of a network interface of the first audio-related device.

    An audio-related device comprising:memory configured to store settings of the audio-related device;a user interface configured to change the settings stored in the memory;a communication port configured to transmit and receive signals on a communication link;a node identification module configured to generate a test node identification for the audio-related device, the node identification module cooperating with the communication port to broadcast the test node identification to other devices connected to the communication link, wherein the node identification module determines, based on notification from the other devices, whether the test node identification is a unique node identification on the communication link, wherein, if the test node identification is not a unique node identification, the node identification module generates a new test node identification and repeats the broadcasting and the determining, until the test node identification is a unique node identification on the communication link, wherein, if the test node identification is a unique node identification, the node identification module assigns the test node identification as a node identification to the audio-related device, and characterized in that the node identification module generates the test node identification and the new test node identification for the audio-related device by generating a random node identification which is independent of a network interface of the communication port of the audio-related device.

    The audio-related device as in any of claims 12-14, where the node identification module is configured to generate a second node identification in response to receiving a redundant identification message on the communication port.

    The audio-related device as in any of claims 12-15, where the memory includes a routing table configured to store routes between audio-related devices connected to the communication link.

    The audio-related device as in either of claims 16 or 17, where the routing table includes a serial number field that represents a unique identification for the destination device corresponding to the node address.

    A performance equipment manager comprising:memory configured to store information regarding audio-related devices;a communication port configured to be connected to a network, the communication port adapted to receive and transmit signals with audio-related devices connected to the network;a node resolution module operatively coupled to the communication port, the node resolution module including a node identification engine adapted to assign a node identification to each of the audio-related devices connected to the network;a user interface configured to change settings of the audio-related devices connected to the network, and wherein the assigning of the node identification to an audio-related device is performed by the node identification engine being adapted to: generate a test node identification for the audio-related device;broadcast the test node identification to other devices over the network;determine, based on notifications from the other devices in the network, whether the test node identification is a unique node identification in the network, if the test node identification is not a unique node identification, generate a new test node identification and repeat the broadcasting and determining, until the test node identification is a unique node identification in the network, if the test node identification is a unique node identification, assign the test node identification as the node identification to the audio-related device, and characterized in that the steps of generating the test node identification and the new first test node identification for the audio-related device comprises generating a random node identification which is independent of the communication port of the audio-related device.

    The performance equipment manager as in either of claims 30 or 31, where the node identification engine cooperates with a power sequencer to sequentially assign a node identification to each of the audio-related devices upon power-up.

    The performance equipment manager as in any of claims 30-32, where the communication port is selected from the group consisting of Ethernet, Fire Wire, USB, RS232 and RS485.

    The method as in any of claims 2-6 and 37-38, further comprising:providing a third audio-related device having a third node identification and a third network address;establishing a communication link between the first audio-related device and the second audio-related device;sending a discovery query message from the first audio-related device to the second audio-related device;sending a set proxy message from the first audio-related device to the second audio-related device;sending a discovery information message from the second audio-related device to the third audio-related device;broadcasting a discovery information message from the third audio-related device over a subnet;adding the third node identification and the third network address of the third audio-related device into a second routing table of the second audio-related device in response to receipt of the discovery information message sent from the third audio-related device;forwarding the discovery information message from the third audio-related device to the first audio-related device;and adding the third node identification and the third network address of the third audio-related device into a first routing table of the first audio-related device in response to receipt of the discovery information message sent from the second audio-related device.

    The method as in any of claims 2-6 or 37-39, further comprising the step of sending a get attributes message from the first audio-related device to the second audio-related device.
