11 claims: 6 independent, 5 dependent

  1. 1
An acknowledgement method in a wireless communication system, comprising:receiving a reverse link traffic channel data frame from a remote device;characterised in that the method further comprises the steps of determining a quality of the received data frame based on the energy of the received data frame;transmitting an acknowledgement. (ACK) signal if the quality of the received data frame is indicated as being good;and transmitting a negative acknowledgement (NAK) signal with a delta only if the quality of the received data frame is indicated as being bad but has enough energy such that, if time diversity combined with energy from retransmission of the data frame, it would be sufficient to permit decoding of the data frame to a predetermined quality of service, wherein the delta is calculated such that it provides a differential energy value to be delivered by the remote device on the retransmission to compensate for an energy deficit on the initial transmission of the data frame to permit decoding of the data frame to the predetermined quality of service.
  2. 3
The method of claims 1 or 2, wherein determining the quality of the received data frame includes indicating the quality of the frame as being good when a reverse link pilot signal has enough energy to permit correct decoding of the frame.
  3. 4
The method of any preceding claim, wherein receiving and transmitting are performed by a secondary base station.
  4. 5
A transmission method for a remote device in a wireless communication system, comprising:transmitting a reverse link traffic channel data frame to a base station device;retransmitting said data frame, in response to receiving from the base station device a negative acknowledgement (NAK) signal with a delta, the delta having been calculated to provide a differential energy value to be delivered by the remote device on retransmitting the data frame to compensate for an energy deficit on an initial transmission of the data frame to permit decoding of the data frame to a predetermined quality of service at the base station device wherein the energy of the data frame for retransmission is adjusted based on the received delta.
  5. 7
A remote device for a wireless communication system operating an acknowledgement channel, comprising:means for transmitting a reverse link traffic data frame to a base station device (104);means for retransmitting said data frame, in response to receiving from the base station device a negative acknowledgement (NAK) signal with a delta, the delta having been calculated to provide a differential energy value to be delivered by the remote device on retransmitting the data frame to compensate for an energy deficit on an initial transmission of the data frame to permit decoding, of the data frame to a predetermined quality of service at the base station device;and an energy level adjuster configured to adjust an energy level of the data frame in response to the received delta, and to retransmit the data frame on the reverse link at the adjusted energy level sufficient to permit decoding of the data frame to the predetermined quality of service at the base station device.
  6. 8
A base station device for a wireless communication system, the base station device comprising:means for receiving a reverse link traffic channel data frame from a remote device;characterised by : means for determining a quality of the received data frame based on the energy of the received data frame;means for transmitting an acknowledgement (ACK) signal if the quality of the received data frame is indicated as being good;means for transmitting a negative acknowledgement (NAK) signal with a delta only if the quality of the received data frame is indicated as being bad but has enough energy such that, if time diversity combined with energy from retransmission of the data frame, it would be sufficient to permit decoding of the data frame to a predetermined quality of service, , wherein the delta is calculated such that it provides a differential energy value to be delivered by the remote device on the retransmission of the data frame to compensate for an energy deficit on the initial transmission of the data frame to permit decoding of the data frame to the predetermined quality of service;and a power controller configured to compute the delta and to direct the means for transmitting the NAK signal with the delta for use in adjusting an energy level of the data frame for retransmission such that, if time diversity combined with energy from the received data frame, it would be sufficient to permit decoding of the received data frame to the predetermined quality of service.
  7. 10
The base station device of claims 8 or 9, wherein the base station device (104) is a secondary base station device (104).
  8. 11
A wireless communication system operating an acknowledgement channel, comprising at least one base station device in accordance with any of claims 8 to 10 and at least one remote device in accordance with claim 7.
