Balloon catheter having a flexible distal end

Abstract

A catheter having an elongated shaft with a proximal end, a distal end, and at least one lumen, and a distal portion of the shaft being at least in part within an outer sheath having a wedge-shaped distal end. In one embodiment, the outer sheath around the distal end of the shaft is the distal skirt section of the balloon. In an alternative embodiment, the outer sheath is a sleeve member having at least a portion located distal to the distal end of the balloon.

  1. 1
A balloon catheter (10), comprising:a) an elongated shaft (11) having a proximal end, a distal end, and at least one lumen (18), a distal portion of the shaft (11) being within an outer sheath, the outer sheath having a wedge-shaped distal end defining a tapered distale leading face having a proximal end (22) and a distal end (23);and b) an inflatable balloon (19) on a distal shaft section (13), having an interior in fluid communication with the at least one lumen (18) of the shaft (11), characterised in that : the distal end of the elongated shaft (11) is located distal to the proximal end (22) of the tapered distal leading face of the outer sheath.
  2. 19
A method of making a balloon catheter (10) comprising:a) forming a balloon (19) with a distal skirt section (21), the distal skirt section (21) having a wedge-shaped distal end defining a tapered distal leading face having a proximal end (22) and a distal end (23), and a lumen configured for receiving a distal portion of a catheter shaft (11) therein;b) positioning the distal portion of the catheter shaft (11) in the distal skirt section lumen such that a distal end of the shaft (11) is located distal to the proximal end (22) of the tapered distal leading face;and c) bonding at least a portion of the balloon distal skirt section (21) to the shaft distal portion, to secure the balloon (19) to the shaft (11), so that the balloon (19) has an interior in fluid communication with an inflation lumpen (18) of the shaft (11).
