4 claims: 2 independent, 2 dependent

  1. 1
Apparatus for stimulating tissue having a capacitance, comprising:charge circuitry being adapted to apply a stimulation current to the tissue by injecting current into the tissue via a first electrode, the current returning via a second electrode, the stimulation current causing a voltage to develop between the first and second electrodes across the capacitance of the tissue;and discharge circuitry which is adapted to inject a discharge current between the first and second electrodes to the tissue so as to discharge the capacitance, the discharge current being substantially independent of the voltage between the first and second electrodes caused by the stimulation current, the discharge circuitry being configured to substantially completely discharge the capacitance by continuing to inject the discharge current until the voltage between the first and second electrodes reaches zero, a battery generating a battery voltage which powers at least a first part of the charge circuitry and at least a second part of the discharge circuitry, characterized in that the discharge current is limited to 5% of the stimulation current, thereby eliminating anodal break excitation.
  2. 4
Apparatus according to any of claims 1-3, and comprising a micro-controller which is adapted to measure a time to discharge the capacitance, by measuring a time until the voltage between the first and second electrodes reaches zero, and to generate a measure of the capacitance in response to the time.
