  1. 1
A method of wireless channel selection by a mobile device (10), the mobile device (10) communicating with a wireless network (50), comprising the steps of creating a first connection with the wireless network (50) over a first channel (90);establishing a service between the mobile device (10) and a remote point over said first connection;creating a second connection with the wireless network (50) over a second channel (92);switching said service to said second connection;and terminating said first connection, wherein said step of creating a second connection comprises selecting said second channel (92) and evaluating characteristics of said second channel (92) against service criteria associated with said service established over said first connection, and adapting said service to said characteristics of said second channel (92) if said characteristics of said second channel (92) do not meet said service criteria.
  2. 3
The method as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein said characteristics comprise latency and said service criteria comprise a latency requirement.
  3. 4
The method as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein said characteristics comprise mean bandwidth and said service criteria comprise a mean bandwidth requirement.
  4. 5
The method as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein said characteristics comprise security settings and said service criteria comprise security settings requirements.
  5. 6
The method as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein said service comprises audio and video, and wherein said step of adapting comprises dropping said video to transmit said audio only.
  6. 7
The method as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein said service comprises the transmission of encoded media and wherein said step of adapting comprises modifying a codec used to encode and decode said encoded media.
  7. 8
The method as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein said step of creating a second connection comprises the steps of selecting said second channel (92) and requesting resources from the wireless network (50).
  8. 9
The method as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the wireless network (50) comprises an anchor point (98) and wherein said first connection comprises a first path (94) to said anchor point (98), and wherein said step of creating a second connection comprises establishing a second path (96) to said anchor point (98).
  9. 10
A mobile device (10) for wireless channel selection, the mobile device (10) communicating with a wireless network (50), comprising:a first transceiver (14) for creating a first connection with the wireless network (50) over a first channel;a second transceiver (16) for creating a second connection with the wireless network (50) over a second channel;a switching module (70).coupled to the first and second transceivers (14, 16), said ., switching module (70) directing said first transceiver (14) to create said first connection, establishing a service between the mobile device (10) and a remote point over said first connection, selecting said second channel, and directing said second transceiver (16) to create said second connection;and a memory, said memory containing a list (72) of candidate channels and their characteristics and containing service criteria (74) associated with said service;wherein said switching module (70) switches said service from said first connection to said second connection, and wherein said switching module (70) reads said list (72) of candidate channels and for at least one of said candidate channels compares its characteristics against said service criteria (74) to select said second channel, and wherein said switching module (70) adapts said service to said characteristics of said second channel if said characteristics of said second channel do not meet said service criteria (74).
  10. 13
The mobile device as claimed in any one of claims 10 to 12, wherein said characteristics comprise latency and said service criteria (74) comprise a latency requirement.
  11. 14
The mobile device as claimed in any one of claims 10 to 13, wherein said characteristics comprise mean bandwidth and said service criteria (74) comprise a mean bandwidth requirement.
  12. 15
The mobile device as claimed in any one of claims 10 to 14, wherein said characteristics comprise security settings and said service criteria (74) comprise security settings requirements.
  13. 16
The mobile device claimed in any one of claims 10 to 15, wherein said service comprises audio and video, and wherein said switching module (70) adapts said service by dropping said video to transmit said audio only.
  14. 17
The mobile device claimed in any one of claims 10 to 15, wherein said service comprises the transmission of encoded media and wherein said switching module (70) adapts said service by modifying a codec used to encode and decode said encoded media.
  15. 18
The mobile device as claimed in any one of claims 10 to 17, wherein said switching module (70) outputs a request for resources to said second transceiver (16) for transmission to the wireless network (50) to establish said second connection.
  16. 19
The mobile device as claimed in any one of claims 10 to 18, wherein the wireless network (50) comprises an anchor point (98) and wherein said first connection comprises a first path (94) to said anchor point (98), and wherein said second connection comprises a second path (96) to said anchor point (98).
  17. 20
A computer readable medium comprising code means executable in a processor (38) of a computing device for implementing the method of any of claims 1 to 9.
