25 claims: 14 independent, 11 dependent

  1. 1
A scrubbing product including at least two distinct layers, an abrasive layer and an absorbent fibrous layer, the absorbent fibrous layer being a cellulosic web;the abrasive layer is formed primarily of coarse polymeric fibers, such fibers being aggregate fibers comprising a first polymer strand and a second polymer strand, each said aggregate fiber defining a fiber length, said first and second polymer strands being adhered together for at least about 5mm of the fiber length, said first and second polymer strands each having an average cross sectional diameter of between about 30 microns and about 800 microns, said aggregate fiber defining a non-circular cross section;said layers being adhesively or thermally bonded together.
  2. 4
The scrubbing product of any preceding claim, wherein the aggregate fiber comprises between 2 and about 50 polymer strands.
  3. 5
The scrubbing product of any preceding claim, further defining splits in the aggregate fiber along a portion of the fiber length, wherein the splits in the aggregate fiber are parallel to the polymer strands.
  4. 6
The scrubbing product of any preceding claim, wherein the aggregate fiber is twisted along the length of the aggregate fiber.
  5. 9
The scrubbing product of any preceding claim, wherein said first and second polymer strands individually define a substantially circular cross section prior to being adhered in a side by side arrangement, said first and second polymer strands maintaining elements of said individual substantially circular cross-section in said aggregate fiber.
  6. 10
The scrubbing product of any preceding claim, wherein the first and second polymer strands are adhered together in a side-by-side arrangement for a length of at least about 15 mm.
  7. 11
The scrubbing product of any preceding claim, wherein both of said polymer strands comprise a thermoplastic polymer having a melting point of about 120°C or greater.
  8. 14
The scrubbing product of any preceding claim, wherein said polymer strands are multi-component polymer strands.
  9. 16
The scrubbing product of any preceding claim, wherein both of the polymer strands comprise a metallocene polymer.
  10. 17
The scrubbing product of any preceding claim, wherein both of the polymer strands comprise a polymer having a melt flow rate of about 2000 g/10 min or less, preferably about 500 g/10 min or less, preferably about 200 g/10 min or less, preferably about 100 g/10 min or less.
  11. 18
The scrubbing product of any preceding claim, wherein the major axis of the cross section of the aggregate fiber is greater than about 30 microns, preferably between about 40 microns and about 400 microns.
  12. 19
The scrubbing product of any preceding claim, wherein the polymer strands are translucent.
  13. 20
The scrubbing product of any preceding claim, wherein the first and second polymer strands each have an average cross sectional diameter of greater than about 20 microns, preferably greater than about 30 microns, preferably greater than about 40 microns, preferably greater than about 50 microns.
  14. 21
A scrubbing product with multiple layers, including at least two distinct layers being an abrasive layer and an absorbent fibrous layer, wherein:the abrasive layer is formed primarily of coarse polymeric fibers in a disordered or random distribution;the abrasive layer further comprises multifilamentary aggregate fibers formed by the partial coalescence of a plurality of polymer strands to form an integral, fiber-like, generally non-circular structure in which substantially parallel polymeric filaments are joined along their sides;the layers being adhesively or thermally bonded together.
