Ethernet automatic protection switching

Abstract

Preventing a loop in a virtual network that spans at least two rings when there is a failure in a segment (6) shared between the rings. A node (50) connected to the shared segment and the rings detects a failure in the segment to transmit data traffic; and prevents transmitting data traffic between the node and all the rings except for one ring, in response to detecting the failure.

  1. 1
In a node directly coupled to each of at least two rings and a segment shared by the rings, a method for preventing a loop in a virtual network that spans at least the two rings when there is a failure in the segment, comprising:detecting a failure in the segment to transmit data traffic;and preventing transmitting data traffic between the node and all but one of the rings in response to detecting the failure in the segment to transmit data traffic.
  2. 20
A data structure stored in a machine-readable medium for use by a network device comprising:a first field containing a list of Virtual Local Area Networks (VLANs) protected by Ethernet automatic protection switching (EAPS);a second field containing a list of ports of a node on which EAPS domains are defined;and a third field containing a mapping of the protected VLANs to the ports.
  3. 24
A data structure stored in a machine-readable medium for use by a network device comprising:a first field defining a port via which a first node is coupled to a segment connecting the first node to a second node;a second field defining an Ethernet automatic protection switching (EAPS) domain associated with the port;and a third field defining a state of the segment.
  4. 28
A control packet sent between nodes in a network, the control packet having an Ethernet header comprising:a first field containing a control message type;a second field containing a Virtual Local Area Network Identifier (VLAN ID) identifying a control VLAN associated with a node sending the packet;a third field containing a mode identifying whether the node is a controller node or a partner node;and a fourth field containing a link ID identifying a link associated with the node.
