Miniature auto focus piezo actuator system

Abstract

Actuator systems are provided for automatically focusing an optical image reader. Techniques are also provided which are applicable to the design of imaging engines and imaging lens systems associated with image readers of various types. More specifically, the present invention relates to lens guidance assemblies and actuator systems for automatically focusing an objective lens associated with an imaging system of an optical image reader. The optical image reader is preferably an optical code image reader for imaging optical codes, such as bar codes.

  1. 1
An imaging apparatus (400), comprising:an image sensor (405) for producing electronic signals corresponding to optical information representative of a target image;a lens assembly (410) for focusing the target image on the image sensor (405), and at least two piezo actuator assemblies (425) provided along a longitudinal axis, wherein the piezo actuator assemblies (425) are configured to each receive a control signal for causing movement of tips (435) of the piezo actuator assemblies (425), characterized in that : said piezo actuator assemblers (425) are in contact with a longitudinal flange (440) extending from the lens assembly (410) such that movement of said tips (435) causes movement of the lens assembly (410) via the flange (440) in a direction parallel said longitudinal axis, wherein the longitudinal axis and the longitudinal flange (440) are substantially perpendicular with respect to each other.
  2. 17
A method of focusing an image with an imaging apparatus (400), the method comprising the steps of:determining a distance between the imaging apparatus (400) and a target image;and correlating the determined distance to the target image to a position of a lens guidance assembly (124, 430), characterized by : determining a current position of a lens assembly (410) with respect to the position of the lens guidance assembly (124, 430);determining an amount of distance that the lens assembly (410) needs to be moved to focus the target image on an image sensor (405), and moving the lens assembly (410) the determined amount of distance, to focus the target image on the image sensor (405), wherein the lens assembly (410) is moved a determined distance via a piezo actuator assembly (425) to focus the target image on the image sensor (405), wherein the piezo actuator assembly (425) comprises at least two piezo actuator assemblies (425) provided along a longitudinal axis and in contact with a longitudinal flange (440) extending from the lens assembly (410) such that movement of tips (435) of the piezo actuator assemblies (425) causes movement of the lens assembly (410) via the flange (440) in a direction parallel said longitudinal axis, wherein the piezo actuator assemblies (425) are configured to each receive a control signal for causing movement of the tips (435), wherein the longitudinal axis and the longitudinal flange, (440) are substantially perpendicular with respect to each other.
