Abstract

The present invention is directed to a process for handling and/or disposing catalyst fines produced in an oxygenate-to-olefins reactor. The process enhances the way catalyst fines are separated from the liquid fraction by use of a flocculent.

21 claims: 10 independent, 11 dependent

  1. 1
A process for disposing catalyst fines produced in an oxygenate-to-olefins reactor, the process comprising the steps of:(a) providing a reactor effluent stream having one or more olefin product(s), the reactor effluent stream being entrained with catalyst fines;(b) quenching the reactor effluent stream to produce a liquid fraction and a quenched effluent stream, the liquid fraction comprising the catalyst fines, and the quenched effluent stream comprising the one or more olefin product(s);(c) transporting the liquid fraction to a separation device;(d) adding a flocculent to the liquid fraction;and (e) separating the catalyst fines and flocculent from the liquid fraction.
  2. 3
The process of any of claims I and 2, wherein the step of (e) separating takes 2.5 hours or less for effective separation of catalyst fines and flocculent from the liquid fraction.
  3. 4
The process of any of the preceding claims, wherein the weight of catalyst fines expressed as a percentage of the total weight of the liquid fraction is 10 wt.% or less.
  4. 5
The process of any of the preceding claims, wherein the oxygenate is from a process for converting a methane containing source to an oxygenate.
  5. 6
A process for making a polymer product comprising:(a) obtaining one or more olefin product from the process of any of the preceding claims;(b) polymerizing the one or more olefin product(s) to produce one or more polymer products.
  6. 7
The process of any one of claims 1 to 6, wherein the separation device is a centrifuge.
  7. 10
The process of any one of the preceding claims, wherein 5 wt.% or less of the catalyst fines in the reactor effluent stream has a particle size greater than 40 microns, based upon the total weight of catalyst fines in the reactor effluent stream.
  8. 12
The process of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the flocculent is a cationic polymer.
  9. 14
The process of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the weight of the catalyst fines in the liquid fraction is 5 wt.% or less based upon the total weight of the liquid fraction.
  10. 18
The process of any of the preceding claims, wherein the ratio of the weight of the catalyst fines to the weight of the flocculent is less than the amount at which the given flocculent results in overdosing.
