12 claims: 4 independent, 8 dependent

  1. 1
An electric arc welder (200) operatable to perform a short circuit welding process between an electrode (210) and a workpiece (212), said process comprising a succession of alternate short circuit conditions (10) and arc conditions (12), with a first waveform (100) during said short circuit condition (10) and a second waveform (150) during said arc condition (12), a first waveform generator to construct said first waveform from a series of current pulses (20) controlled by a pulse wave modulator operated at a rate greater than 18 kHz and a second waveform generator to construct said second waveform from a series of current pulses (20) controlled by a pulse wave modulator operated at a rate greater than 18 kHz, characterized in that said second waveform generator has a circuit to generate said second waveform (150) with a generally constant arc parameter during said arc condition (12).
  2. 3
The welder as defined in claims 1 or 2, wherein said parameter is arc voltage.
  3. 4
The welder as defined in any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein said parameter is arc power.
  4. 5
The welder as defined in any one of claims 1 to 4, including a voltage detector device with a circuit to sense the arc voltage between said electrode and said workpiece and a circuit to shift said weld process from said short circuit condition to said arc condition upon creation of an arc signal from said detector device when said sensed voltage is greater than a given value.
  5. 9
The welder as defined in any one of claims 1 to 8, wherein said first waveform (100) is a current waveform with a first slope, a break point (326) and then a second slope.
