14 claims: 2 independent, 12 dependent

  1. 1
A self-expanding closure device (132) having a compressed insertion configuration and an enlarged deployed configuration, the self-expanding closure device comprising:an elastic support (112) having a substantially elongated length (234) between a distal end (230) and a proximal end (232) in the insertion configuration, and forming an outer periphery of the self-expanding closure device in the deployed configuration;and a sheet attached along at least a portion of the length of the elastic support in the insertion configuration and forming a barrier (138) within the outer periphery in the deployed configuration.
  2. 8
The closure device (132) to claim 1, wherein the device is configured such that the outer periphery is formed in an angular progression (245) about a central axis as the self-expanding closure device is progressively deployed, and wherein the outer periphery is progressively formed as the elastic support (112) bends from the insertion configuration to the deployed configuration.
  3. 10
The closure device according to any of the claims 1 to 9, wherein the sheet comprises ePTFE.
  4. 12
The closure device according to any of the claim 1 to 11, wherein the device remains flexible in its insertion configuration.
  5. 13
The closure device according to any of the claim 1 to 12, wherein the elastic support (112) forms more than one outer periphery in the deployed configuration;and the sheet forms a barrier (138) within each outer periphery in that deployed configuration.
  6. 14
The closure device according to any of the claims 1 to 13, wherein the device is configured for use with septal defects, patent-ductus-arteriosis closure, fallopian tubes, or arteriosvenous fistulas.
