6 claims: 2 independent, 4 dependent

  1. 1
A surgical tracking system (20), comprising:a wireless position sensor (70, 90) responsive to externally-applied magnetic fields within a working volume of the tracking system, to generate and transmit sensor signals indicative of coordinates of the position sensor;a plurality of field generator coils (32), which are adapted to generate the magnetic fields so as to define the working volume (118);a reference structure (42, 110, 130, 150), to which the field generator coils are fixed, and which is movable relative to a subject in order to position the working volume (118) so as to intercept a bone;a surgical tool (28), the surgical tool comprising a tool position sensor (104), which is adapted to generate and transmit, responsive to the externally-applied magnetic fields, tool signals indicative of coordinates of the tool;and a system controller (36), which is coupled to receive and process the sensor signals so as to determine the coordinates of the position sensor and to receive and process the tool signals to determine the coordinates of the tool, wherein the wireless position sensor is adapted to be implanted in the bone of the subject, the surgical tool is for operating on the bone of the patient, the reference structure holds the field generators in fixed relative positions and the system controller is coupled to receive and process the sensor signals so as to determine the coordinates of the position sensor within the bone.
  2. 4
The system according to any of claims 1 to 3, wherein the wireless position senor (70) includes a communication coil (76), the tool sensor (104) includes a communication coil, and the reference structure (110) includes a communication coil (176) to receive signals transmitted by the communication coil of the wireless position sensor and the communication coil of the tool sensor.
