A surgical tracking system, comprising:a wireless position sensor (70), which is adapted to be implanted in a bone (50) of a subject, and responsively to externally-applied magnetic fields within a working volume (118) of the tracking system, to generate and transmit sensor signals indicative of coordinates of the position sensor within the bone;a plurality of field generator coils (32), which are adapted to generate the magnetic fields so as to define the working volume (118), each field generator coil having a coil axis;a reference structure (110), to which the field generator coils (32) are fixed in predetermined locations, and which is movable relative to the subject in order to position the working volume (118) so as to intercept the bone;a system controller (36), which is coupled to receive and process the sensor signals so as to determine the coordinates of the position sensor within the bone;and an operating table (112) having an opening, characterised in that the reference structure (110) is configured to be inserted into the opening in the operating table (112) to slide the reference structure in and out of the table in order to shift the position of the working volume (118) along the table, and each of the plurality of field generator coils (32) is tilted relative to the reference structure so that each coil axis is inclined relative to the reference structure and the coil axes are directed diagonally inward of the reference structure to lower the centroid of the working volume (118) toward the operating table (112).
