    Claims of equivalent WO 2004052183 A2 CLAIMS I/We claim:[d] 1. A method for treating a set of symptoms corresponding to a neurological disorder exhibited by a patient, comprising: determining a first set of neural stimulation parameters capable of treating a first subset of symptoms;determining a second set of neural stimulation parameters capable of treating a second subset of symptoms;and applying a neural stimulation therapy based upon the first set of neural stimulation parameters and the second set of neural stimulation parameters to the patient. [c2] 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first set of neural stimulation parameters defines a first frequency and the second set of neural stimulation parameters defines a second frequency. [c3] 3. The method of claim 2, wherein the neural stimulation therapy defines a frequency function that includes the first and the second frequencies. [c4] 4. The method of claim 3, wherein the neural stimulation therapy defines a frequency function that sweeps between the first and the second frequencies. [c5] 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first subset of symptoms responds to neural stimulation more rapidly than the second subset of symptoms. [c6] 6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising positioning a set of electrodes with respect to a target neural population within the patient. [c7] 7. The method of claim 6, wherein at least one electrode within the set of electrodes is configured to deliver neural stimulation therapy to a cortical region within the patient. [c8] 8. The method of claim 7, wherein the cortical region corresponds to a neural population that facilitates control of at least one type of patient movement. [c9] 9. A method for treating a set of symptoms corresponding to a neurological disorder exhibited by a patient, comprising: applying a first neural stimulation signal having a first frequency to the patient to treat a first subset of symptoms;and applying a second neural stimulation signal having a second frequency to the patient to treat a second subset of symptoms. [do] 10. The method of claim 9, wherein the first neural stimulation signal is applied during a first time interval and the second neural stimulation signal is applied during a second time interval. [cii] 11. The method of claim 10, wherein the first and second time intervals depend upon a severity of the first subset of symptoms relative to the second subset of symptoms. [ci2] 12. A method for treating a set of symptoms corresponding to a neurological disorder exhibited by a patient, comprising: applying a first neural stimulation therapy to the patient in a continuous or generally continuous manner during a first time interval;and applying a second neural stimulation therapy to the patient in a noncontinuous or interrupted manner following the first time interval, wherein the second neural stimulation therapy provides an extent of relief from a subset of patient symptoms that is acceptable relative to an extent of relief from the subset of patient symptoms provided by the first neural stimulation therapy. [ci3] 13. The method of claim 12, wherein the first time interval is greater than approximately one week. [ci4] 14. The method of claim 12, wherein the first time interval is approximately one month. [ci5] 15. The method of claim 12, wherein the second neural stimulation therapy comprises continuous or generally continuous neural stimulation during the patient's waking hours. [ci6] 16. A method for treating a set of symptoms corresponding to a neurological disorder exhibited by a patient, comprising: applying a first neural stimulation therapy to the patient in a continuous or generally continuous manner during a first time interval;and applying a second neural stimulation therapy to the patient in a noncontinuous or interrupted manner following the first time interval, wherein the second neural stimulation therapy provides an extent of relief from a subset of patient symptoms that is generally identical to an extent of relief from the subset of patient symptoms provided by the first neural stimulation therapy. A method for optimizing a cortical stimulation procedure, comprising: (a) positioning an electrical contact at least proximate to the cortex of the patient at a site related to neural activity associated with a symptom of a movement disorder;(b) delivering an electrical test stimulation to the site via the contact;(c) evaluating an effect of the test stimulation on the symptom;(d) adjusting a parameter of the test stimulation;(e) repeating procedures (b) - (d);and (f) selecting one or more of the test stimulations that produce adequate results for treating the symptom as an ongoing treatment protocol. [ci8] 18. The method of claim 17 wherein positioning the contact comprises implanting the contact so that the contact is juxtaposed to the dura mater of the patient. [ci9] 19. The method of claim 17 wherein delivering a test stimulation to the site comprises selecting an initial waveform based on a waveform that produced adequate results for treating the symptom in other patients. [c20] 20. The method of claim 17 wherein adjusting a parameter of the test stimulation comprises changing at least one of a frequency, amplitude, and/or duration of a waveform of the test stimulation. The method of claim 17, further comprising a quiescent period after evaluating the effect of the test stimulation on the symptom in procedure (c) and before repeating delivery of a test stimulation to the site. [c22] 22. The method of claim 21 wherein the quiescent period is approximately at least 1-600 seconds. [c23] 23. The method of claim 22, further comprising estimating a patient response threshold to the test stimulation by repeatedly applying the test stimulation at increasing amplitudes until a response is evoked in the patient. The method of claim 23 wherein the response evoked in the patient comprises movement of a body part affected by the movement disorder, and the method further comprises monitoring muscle activity of the affected body part. The method of claim 23 wherein the response evoked in the patient comprises an electrical response in a body part affected by the movement disorder, and the method further comprises monitoring the affected body part for electrical activity correlated to the test stimulation. The method of claim 23 wherein the response evoked in the patient comprises a sensation in a body part affected by the movement disorder, and the method further comprises monitoring sensations of the affected body part. [c27] 27. The method of claim 17 wherein the ongoing treatment protocol comprises applying the selected test stimulation in procedure (f) to the patient over an extended period of time. [c28] 28. The method of claim 17 wherein the ongoing treatment protocol comprises repeatedly applying the selected test stimulation in procedure (f) to the patient over a plurality of intervals separated by quiescent periods without applying the selected test stimulation. The method of claim 17 wherein the ongoing treatment comprises reevaluating the selected test stimulation protocol after a period of time by repeating procedures (b) - (d) with the selected test stimulation protocol being used as an initial test electrical stimulation for the reevaluating procedure. A method for optimizing a cortical stimulation procedure, comprising: positioning an electrical contact proximate to the cortex of the patient at a site related to neural activity associated with a symptom of a movement disorder;executing a test procedure by applying a plurality of different test stimulation waveforms to the site via the electrical contact, evaluating the efficacy of the different test stimulation waveforms in treating the symptom of the movement disorder, and selecting a treatment waveform from one of the test stimulation waveforms;and performing an ongoing treatment protocol using the selected treatment waveform. The method of claim 30 wherein the ongoing treatment protocol comprises applying the selected treatment waveform over a plurality of intervals separated by rest periods during which the selected treatment waveform is not applied to the site. The method of claim 30 wherein the ongoing treatment protocol comprises reevaluating the selected treatment protocol after a period of time by applying a plurality of additional test stimulation waveforms to the site via the electrical contact, analyzing the efficacy of the plurality of additional test stimulation waveforms, and selecting a continued treatment protocol from the ongoing treatment protocol and the additional test stimulation waveforms. The method of claim 30 wherein selecting a treatment waveform from one of the test stimulation waveforms comprises selecting a first ongoing treatment waveform for treating a first symptom and selecting a second ongoing treatment waveform for treating a second symptom, the first and second ongoing treatment waveforms defining the ongoing treatment protocol such that both the first and second ongoing waveforms are applied to the site during the ongoing treatment protocol. A method for treating a movement disorder, comprising: positioning an electrical contact proximate to the cortex of the patient at a site related to neural activity associated with a symptom of a movement disorder;determining a patient response threshold by repeatedly applying test electrical stimulation waveforms via the contact to the site at increasing amplitudes until a response is evoked in the patient;and performing an ongoing treatment protocol using a test stimulation waveform having an amplitude less than the patient response threshold. The method of claim 34 wherein the response evoked in the patient comprises movement of a body part affected by the movement disorder, and determining the patient response threshold comprises (a) monitoring muscle activity of the affected body part, (b) identifying an amplitude of a test stimulation waveform at which the affected body part exhibits muscle activity, and (c) ascertaining the patient response threshold based on the identified amplitude. The method of claim 34 wherein the response evoked in the patient comprises an electrical response in a body part affected by the movement disorder, and determining the patient response threshold comprises (a) monitoring electrical activity in the affected body part, (b) identifying an amplitude of a test stimulation waveform at which the affected body part exhibits electrical activity, and (c) ascertaining the patient response threshold based on the identified amplitude. The method of claim 34, further comprising: executing a test procedure by applying a plurality of different test stimulation waveforms to the site at an amplitude below the patient response threshold, evaluating the efficacy of the different test stimulation waveforms in treating the symptom of the movement disorder, and selecting a treatment waveform from one of the test stimulation waveforms;and performing an ongoing treatment protocol using the selected treatments waveform. [c38] 38. The method of claim 34, further comprising performing an ongoing treatment protocol using a waveform having an amplitude less than the patient response threshold. [c39] 39. A method for optimizing a cortical stimulation procedure for treating a movement disorder, comprising: positioning an electrical contact over the precentral gyrus, the central sulcus and/or the postcentral gyrus of the cortex of the patient;executing a test procedure by applying a plurality of different test stimulation waveforms to the contact, evaluating the efficacy of the different test stimulation waveforms in treating a symptom of the movement disorder, and selecting a treatment waveform from one of the test stimulation waveforms;and performing an ongoing treatment protocol using the selected treatments waveform. A method for optimizing a cortical stimulation procedure, comprising: positioning an electrode array having a plurality of electrical contacts proximate to the cortex of the patient at a site related to neural activity associated with a symptom of a movement disorder;executing a test procedure by applying a plurality of different test stimulation waveforms to one or more of the contacts, evaluating the efficacy of the different test stimulation waveforms in treating the symptom of the movement disorder, and selecting a treatment waveform from one of the test stimulation waveforms;and performing an ongoing treatment protocol using the selected treatments waveform. The method of claim 40 wherein executing the test procedure comprises applying a common test stimulation waveform to each contact to determine which one or more contacts to use for performing the ongoing treatment protocol. [c42] 42. The method of claim 40 wherein executing the test procedure comprises applying the test stimulation waveforms to different combinations of contacts on the electrode array. [c43] 43. The method of claim 40 wherein executing the test procedure comprises applying a plurality of different test stimulation waveforms to at least two different contacts on the electrode array. [c44] 44. A method for establishing stimulation parameters for a patient having symptoms corresponding to a neurological disorder, comprising: determining a first set of neural stimulation parameters capable of treating a first subset of symptoms;determining a second set of neural stimulation parameters capable of treating a second subset of symptoms;and establishing stimulation parameters based upon the first set of neural stimulation parameters and the second set of neural stimulation parameters. 45. A method for establishing stimulation parameters for a patient having symptoms corresponding to a neurological disorder, comprising: evaluating the efficacy of a first set of neural stimulation parameters previously applied to a patient to treat a first subset of symptoms;evaluating the efficacy of a second set of neural stimulation parameters previously applied to a patient to treat a second subset of symptoms;and adjusting stimulation parameters based upon the efficacy of the first set of neural stimulation parameters and the efficacy of the second set of neural stimulation parameters.
