    Claims of equivalent WO 2004045485 A2 CLAIMS:1. An air pulse generator comprising: an air chamber shell having a plurality of diaphragm openings and means for smoothing air flow between the diaphragm openings;a diaphragm motor mounted on the air chamber shell;a plurality of diaphragm assemblies within the diaphragm openings, the diaphragm assemblies being powered by the diaphragm motor;and wherein the diaphragm assemblies balance vibration forces produced by the air pulse generator.

    An air pulse generator comprising:a housing;an air chamber assembly within the housing for producing a pressure having a steady state component and an oscillatory component, and wherein the air chamber assembly further comprises: means for balancing vibration forces;means for smoothing air flow;and means for supporting the air chamber assembly within the housing to reduce noise and vibration.

    A method of providing high frequency chest wall oscillation to a patient, the method comprising:selecting a mode corresponding to a protocol;generating oscillating pneumatic pressure according to the protocol, the oscillating pneumatic pressure having a steady state pressure component and an oscillatory pressure component;applying an oscillating force to a chest of the patient according to the protocol, the oscillating force having a steady state force component corresponding to the steady state pressure component, and an oscillatory force component corresponding to the oscillatory pressure component;and wherein the mode is one of a plurality of modes stored within an air pulse generator which generates the oscillating pneumatic pressure.

    A method of providing high frequency chest wall oscillation to a patient, the method comprising:storing a plurality of modes, each mode corresponding to a protocol for performing the high frequency chest wall oscillation;identifying a protocol as a function of a selected mode;generating oscillating pneumatic pressure according to the protocol, the oscillating pneumatic pressure having a steady state pressure component and an oscillatory pressure component;and applying an oscillating force to a chest of the patient according to the protocol, the oscillating force having a steady state force component corresponding to the steady state pressure component, and an oscillatory force component corresponding to the oscillatory pressure component.

    An air pulse generator with an improved user interface, the air pulse generator comprising:an air pulse module for producing oscillating pressure in a plurality of modes;a control for controlling operation of the air pulse module, storing programs for each mode that control the air pulse generator to operate according to a corresponding protocol for each mode and responding to inputs for selecting modes;and a user interface for entering inputs to the control for selecting a mode such that the protocol corresponding to a selected mode is automatically performed by the air pulse module.

    An air pulse generator with an improved user interface for a chest wall oscillation system, the air pulse generator comprising:an air pulse module for producing oscillating pressure;a control board having a microprocessor for storing a plurality of modes that control operation of the air pulse module;and a user interface for selecting a mode stored in the microprocessor such that a protocol defining the mode is automatically performed by the air pulse module.

    An air pulse generator comprising:an air pulse module, wherein the air pulse module produces a pressure having a steady state pressure component and an oscillating pressure component, the oscillating pressure component superimposed with the steady state pressure component;and wherein the air pulse generator has a weight of less than about 30 pounds and is less than about 14 inches wide, less than about 10 inches high and less than about 10 inches deep.

    An air pulse generator for use in a chest wall oscillation system, the air pulse generator comprising:an air pulse module at least partially comprised of plastic and having a shell with a volume of about 130 in 3 ;a pair of balanced diaphragm assemblies on the air pulse module for pulsing air;and means for dissipating heat produced by the air pulse module.

    A method of providing high frequency chest wall oscillation to a patient, the method comprising:generating oscillating pneumatic pressure having a steady state pressure component and an oscillatory pressure component;applying an oscillating force to a chest of the patient, the oscillating force having a steady state force component corresponding to the steady state pressure component, and an oscillatory force component corresponding to the oscillatory pressure component;and wherein oscillation frequency of the oscillating pneumatic pressure changes over time according to a predetermined pattern, while maintaining the steady state pressure component.

    A method of providing high frequency chest wall oscillation to a patient, the method comprising:generating oscillating pneumatic pressure having a steady state pressure component and an oscillatory pressure component, the oscillating pneumatic pressure having a first oscillation frequency and a second oscillation frequency;applying an oscillating force to a chest of the patient, the oscillating force having a steady state force component corresponding to the steady state pressure component, and an oscillatory force component corresponding to the oscillatory pressure component;and alternating the oscillating pneumatic pressure between the first oscillation frequency and the second oscillation frequency during high frequency chest wall oscillation.

    An air pulse generator comprising:an air chamber shell having at least one diaphragm opening;a diaphragm motor mounted on the air chamber shell, the diaphragm motor having an electronic control which supplies drive signals to the diaphragm motor as a function of instantaneous angular velocity of a plurality of rotational positions during each revolution to maintain angular velocity despite varying load on the diaphragm motor;and at least one diaphragm assembly oscillating within the diaphragm opening, the diaphragm assembly being powered by the diaphragm motor.

    An air pulse generator comprising:an air chamber assembly for producing a pressure having a steady state component and an oscillatory component, and wherein the air chamber assembly includes at least one diaphragm assembly powered by a diaphragm motor;means for sensing angular rotational position of the diaphragm motor;means for determining angular velocity of the diaphragm motor at a plurality of sensed rotational positions during each revolution of the diaphragm motor;and means for controlling drive signals to the diaphragm motor as a function of the angular velocity determined.

    An air pressure generator for oscillatory chest wall compression, the air pressure generator comprising:means for producing an air pressure;means for driving the means for producing;a first power supply capacitor;a second power supply capacitor;a first charging circuit for charging the first power supply capacitor from a first phase of AC input power;a second charging circuit for charging the second power supply capacitor from a second phase of AC input power;a switching power supply for producing current pulses derived from the first capacitor during the second phase and from the second capacitor during the first phase;an output voltage capacitor for providing a drive voltage to the means for driving;and means for controlling the drive voltage by selectively supplying the current pulses to the output voltage capacitor.

    An air pulse generator comprising:a blower for producing a steady state air pressure component;a first motor for driving the blower;an air pulse module for receiving the steady state air pressure component and generating a pulsed air pressure output;a second motor for driving the air pulse module;a first motor drive circuit for supplying a first variable voltage drive signal;and a second motor drive circuit for supplying a second variable voltage drive signal.

    An air pulse module for an air pulse generator, the air pulse module comprising:an air chamber shell having a volume of about 130 in 3 ;a blower for producing a steady state pressure component within the air pulse module;a blower motor for driving the blower;a first diaphragm assembly for producing an oscillating pressure component within the air pulse module;and a second diaphragm assembly for producing the oscillating pressure component with the air pulse module.

    An air pulse generator comprising:an air pulse module having an air chamber defined by an air chamber shell, a diaphragm motor and diaphragm assemblies, the diaphragm assemblies oscillating air within the air chamber and wherein the diaphragm motor is mounted to the air chamber shell, the shell being comprised of metal to dissipate heat from the diaphragm motor;a housing encompassing the air pulse moduie, the housing having a vent placed such that heat from the diaphragm motor is released through the vent;a support placed between the housing and the diaphragm motor of the air pulse module, the support shaped to allow air to circulate around the diaphragm motor;and a control board associated with the air pulse module for carrying electronic circuitry controlling the air pulse generator, the control board having means for dissipating heat from the electronic circuitry.

    An air pulse generator comprising:an air pulse module having a diaphragm motor;means for dissipating heat generated by the diaphragm motor;a control board having electronic circuitry for controlling the air pulse module;and means for internal heat dissipation from the electronic circuitry.
