  1. 1
A method (300) of scheduling execution of work units on distributed nodes in a data processing infrastructure the work units being adapted to invoke external services, each external service being accessible according to an associated interface, the method including the steps under the control of a central scheduling application of:associating (304) at least one of the work units with a descriptor including an indication of an external service and with an indication of an interface document, said interface document defining the interface for at least one external service on a distributed node, said interface referring to a first protocol to communicate with the at least one external service and a second protocol to communicate over the network with the distributed nodes of the at least one external service;submitting (308) the work units for execution according to a predefined plan;retrieving (336) using the indication of an interface document, an interface document corresponding with each external service associated with the submitted work units;building (338-342) a request message for each external service associated with the submitted work units according to the retrieved interface document, using the first protocol to communicate with the corresponding external service, and sending (364) each request message to the corresponding external service to cause the invocation of the external service using the second protocol to communicate over the network with the distributed nodes of the external service.
  2. 5
The method (300) according to any claim from 1 to 4, wherein the central scheduling application includes a scheduler and at least one agent, the scheduler performing the steps of associating (304) and submitting (308), and wherein each descriptor further includes an indication of the agent associated with the corresponding work unit, the method further including the steps of:the scheduler sending (316) a request of execution of each submitted work unit to the associated agent, the request of execution including an indication of the corresponding descriptor, and the agent retrieving (336) the interface document of the corresponding external service, building (338-342) the request message for the external service, and sending (364) the request message to the external service in response to the request of execution.
  3. 6
The method (300) according to any claim from 1 to 5, wherein the indication of the interface document consists of an address of an external location in the infrastructure storing the interface document, the step of retrieving the interface document including:downloading (336) the interface document from the corresponding external location.
  4. 7
The method according to any claim from 1 to 6, wherein the descriptor includes authentication information for the external service, the method further including the step of:sending (352) the authentication information to the external service, the invocation of the external service being authorized according to the authentication information.
  5. 8
The method according to any claim from 1 to 7, wherein each external service consists of a web service.
  6. 10
A computer program (205, 210), directly loadable into a working memory of a data processing system (105,110), for performing the method of any claim from 1 to 9 when the program is run on the system.
  7. 12
A system (105, 110) for scheduling execution of work units in a data processing infrastructure (100) with a distributed architecture, the system comprising components adapted to perform the method of any claim 1 to 9.
