Computing device with environment aware features

Abstract

An electronic device that includes a processor, an output device connected to the processor for issuing a stimulus to a user of the device, at least one input device connected to the processor and responsive to user input activity, and a device lock module associated with the processor for (i) implementing restrictions on user access to the device if user input activity falls below a threshold; and (ii) redetermining the threshold if a stimulus is issued by the output device. Also, a mobile device that includes a processor, at least a first input device connected to the processor for providing input signals thereto, an output device connected to the processor for providing output to a user of the mobile device, the processor being configured for determining location information for the mobile device based on input signals received from the first input device and adjusting an operating characteristic of the electronic device based on the determined location information.

  1. 1
An electronic device (10), comprising a processor (38) an output device (28, 34) connected to the processor (38) for issuing a stimulus to a user of the electronic device (10); at least one input device (28, 32) connected to the processor (38) and responsive to user input activity; and characterized by :a device lock module (65) associated with the processor (38) for (i) implementing restrictions on user access to the electronic device (10) if user input, activity falls below a threshold;and (ii) redetermining the threshold if a stimulus is issued by the output device (28, 34).
  2. 5
The electronic device (10) of either one of claims 3 or 4 characterized in that the device lock module is configured for tracking user response times to issued stimuli and adjusting the second value based on the tracked user response times.
  3. 6
The electronic device (10) of any one of claims 1-5 characterized in that the stimulus comprises at least one of an aural stimulus and a physical stimulus.
  4. 7
The electronic device (10) of any one of claims 1-6 characterized in that the electronic device is a mobile communications device enabled for communications over a wireless network (50), and the processor (38) is configured for causing the output device (28, 34) to issue the stimulus when the electronic device (10) receives a new communication addressed to it over the wireless network (50), the new communication comprising an electronic message or an incoming telephone call.
  5. 8
The electronic device (10) of any one of claims 1 to 7 wherein the electronic device (10) comprises an event scheduling application (58) associated with the processor (38) for generating event reminders, the processor (38) being configured for causing the output device (28, 34) to issue the stimulus when an event reminder is generated.
  6. 9
The electronic device (10) of any one of claims 1 to 8 characterized in that stimuli are issued for at least two different types of events, the threshold being redetermined based on the type of event for which the stimulus is issued.
  7. 10
A method for providing security for a mobile communications device (10), comprising steps of monitoring for predetermined user interaction with the mobile communications device (10);and locking the mobile communications device if the predetermined user interaction is not detected within a predetermined lockout time interval;and characterized by a step of resetting the lockout time interval to a shorter value if a user stimulus is issued by the mobile communications device (10).
  8. 11
A mobile device (10) having a processor (38);at least a first input device (11, 30, 70) connected to the processor for providing input signals thereto;and an output device (28, 34) connected to the processor for providing output to a user of the mobile device;characterized in that the processor (38) is configured for determining location information for the mobile device (10) based on input signals received from the first input device (11, 30, 70) and adjusting an operating characteristic of the electronic device (10) based on the determined location information.
  9. 15
The mobile device (10) of any one of claims 11 to 14 characterized in that the first input device (30) comprises an interface for docking the mobile device to a desktop computer (72), the location information being determined based on whether the mobile device (10) is docked to the desktop computer (72).
  10. 17
The mobile device (10) of any one of claims 11 to 16 characterized in that the first input device comprises a GPS receiver (70).
  11. 18
The mobile device (10) of any one of claims 11 to 17 characterized in that the first input device comprises a wireless communications subsystem (11) connected to the processor for exchanging communications signals with a wireless network (50) comprising a plurality of base stations (76), the location information being determined based on identities of the base stations (76).
  12. 19
The mobile device (10) of any one of claims 11 to 18 characterized in that the mobile device (10) is enabled for receiving electronic messages and comprises a message filtering module (66) associated with the processor (38) for filtering electronic messages received by the mobile device (10), the operating characteristic comprising filtering criteria for filtering the electronic messages.
