  1. 1
A method for wireless communication between stations (12, 16, 25, 27, 29, 31, 33) of differing protocols, the method comprises:determining whether protocols of target stations (25A, 27, 29, 31, 33) of a wireless communication are different than a wireless local area network (WLAN) protocol of a source station (25);when each of a plurality of the target stations (27, 29, 31, 33) has a different protocol than the WLAN protocol of the source station (25), determining whether the different protocols of each of the plurality of target stations (27, 29, 31, 33) are backward compatible and determining whether the wireless communication is a direct wireless communication or an indirect wireless communication;when the wireless communication is the indirect wireless communication, transmitting, by the source station (25), a frame to an access point (12, 16), wherein the frame is formatted in accordance with the WLAN protocol of the source station (25);when the different protocols of each of the plurality of target stations (27, 29, 31, 33) are backward compatible, converting, by the access point (12, 16), the frame into the most legacy frame format based on the different protocols of each of the plurality of target stations (27, 29, 31, 33);and transmitting, by the access point (12,16), the frame to at least one of the target stations (27, 29,31,33).
  2. 3
A station (60) for use in a wireless local area network (WLAN), the station (60) comprises:a radio transmitter section (70, 72) operably coupled to convert outbound digital symbols (90) into outbound radio frequency (RF) (92) signals;a radio receiver section (76, 78, 80) operably coupled to convert inbound RF signals (94) into inbound digital symbols (96);baseband processing module (64) operably coupled to convert the inbound digital symbols (96) into inbound data (98) in accordance with a WLAN protocol and to: determine whether each of a plurality of target stations (27, 29, 31, 33) of a wireless communication has a different protocol than the WLAN protocol of a source station (25);and determine whether the different protocols of each of the plurality of target stations (27, 29, 31, 33) are backward compatible;and determine whether the wireless communication is a direct wireless communication or an indirect wireless communication;and when the different protocols of each of the plurality of target stations (27, 29, 31, 33) are backward compatible, convert a frame formatted in accordance with the WLAN protocol of the source station (25) to the most legacy frame format based on a legacy protocol of the different protocols of each of the plurality of target stations (27, 29, 31, 33), wherein the converted frame is transmitted via the transmitter section (70, 72) to at least one of the target stations (27, 29, 31, 33).
  3. 5
An access point (12, 16) for use in a wireless local area network (WLAN), the access point (12, 16) comprises:means (19) for receiving a frame that is formatted in accordance with a WLAN protocol of a source station (25);means (15) for determining whether each of a plurality of target stations (27, 29, 31, 33) has a different protocol than the WLAN protocol of the source station (25) and for determining whether the different protocols of each of the plurality of target stations (27, 29, 31, 33) are backward compatible;means (15) for converting the frame into the most legacy frame format based on a legacy protocol of the different protocols of each of the plurality of target stations (27, 29, 31, 33);and means (19) for transmitting the frame converted to the most legacy frame format to at least one of the plurality of target stations (27, 29, 31, 33).
